DiCaprio vs. De Niro.

By: Rustycat | in: Movies |

Who will win Scorsese’s protégé award?

De Niro and Dicaprio

Well, I think it’s safe to assume by now that Leonardo DiCaprio is Martin Scorsese’s new protégé. “Gangs of New York”, “Aviator” and now, in Technicolor, “The Departed”.

I guess we have to give it to Leo; he is probably one of the best actors in the world right now. Me personally I would make Edward Norton or Brad Pitt my protégé, but I guess you can do with Leonardo DiCaprio. He wowed us on “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” aside Johnny Depp and did it again on “Basketball Diaries”, but then came what I call his transitional film, “Romeo+Juliet”. It was a really good film but it was borderline good cinema with romance kitsch and it was the gateway to “The Beach” and “Titanic”. I guess the affect it took on me was the exact opposite from what it did to 14 year old girls. But he’s gaining my trust all over again and I thought he was awesome in “Aviator” and all his latest films. I mean come on, the dude was on “Growing Pains” he’s gotta have some street credit.

Anyways, back to our subject of the day, Leo Vs, Scorsese’s previous protégé Robert De Niro.

The duo is a match made in heaven. “Taxi Driver”, “Raging Bull”, “New York New York”, “The King of Comedy”, “Cape Fear” and the all time favorite – “Goodfellas”. Those are just some of the movies they made together. Quite a list, and to their credit, almost all of the movies were smash hits, some will be remembered forever in cinema history (and in my head).

And now we’ve come to Leo and the comparison. Sorry Leo, but there’s no comparison. You still have a long way to go to prove to us that you are Scorsese protégé material. But I can tell you this; you’re on the right track.

The Dicaprio-Scorsese duo is growing stronger at the moment with The Departed getting rave reviews, it even made IMDB’s top fifty voted movies all time.

I thought Leo was going to have a good chance in this battle when I started writing this, but now I see that De Niro is unbeatable, he’s the king of the ring. I feel like watching all the Scorsese films all over again now.

Bah, more like “Apples and chickens.”

De Niro is totally resting on his laurels. He had some great movies, but his contemporary roles aren’t even comparable to the stuff Dicaprio is doing. Voice-overs for second-rate animated features, bad sequels to mediocre comedies, an American Express commercial. De Niro’s got money right? Why is he undermining his legacy?

    De Niro by a landslide.

No question about it, Robert De Niro is in a class by himself.

Robert De Niro was the film, he carried it, the films were
indistinguishable from the characters he played.
He kept the movie riveting, raw with power and emotion.

In other words, his films would simply never achieve the same degree of acclaim with some other actor. The movie was De Niro and De Niro was the movie. DiCaprio’s career
roles do not have the same sort of mesmerizing character
in the way De Niro personified the role, the character, the movie. He WAS the movie.

Who can forget his nutty way off the wall Rupert Pupkin
character?? Di Caprio has far to go.

Well I dont know how everyone could be saying that DiCaprio will ever get to the status of Deniro. Lets look at the facts shall we?

Robert DeNiro got his big break at 31 when he played in the Godfather 2. After that he had some pretty good as mentioned earlier. However his really good roles ended in 1997 which was Wag The Dog which he did when he was 54. Since then he hasnt done anything comparable to any of his other movies, such as Taxi, Godfather etc.

Now we take a look at Dicaprio. He got his big break at 18 with growing pains. And has had 8 really good movies so far with “The Departed” as his newest one. This is all done by the age of 32.(9 if you want to count Titanic…but i really dont like it so i wont count it).

Also if you notice every movie he has done since Gangs of New York has been quite good. Thats 4 in a row folks. Deniro hasnt had 4 good movies in a row at all. The most he has had is 2.

Thats just my two cents. But Deniro is getting really old whereas Dicaprio is getting into his prime. If Dicaprio continues to make excellent movie decisions then he’ll have Deniro beat by the time he’s 60.

And choosing Brad Pitt as the protege…wow what are you smoking. I mean Brad Pitt is mostly just a pretty face to look at. The best movies he’s been in is Fight Club and Snatch.. other then that he doesnt have much to back him up.

  10. Nevin on October 22nd, 2006 3:13 pm

    lets think about the future..
deniro is a great actor but he has not made a film that can live up to his older one’s in a long time.
Scorsese even asked deniro to join him on his latest project, the Departed, but he turned it down.
the fact is…deniro is not the future..dicappiro is..

  13. ex-fan on October 22nd, 2006 4:17 pm

This is off-topic but did anybody feel cheated after watching “The Departed”? I was expecting it to be better than the Hokong version - “The Infernal Affair” given the Holywood power behind it. I was so disappointed that Martin let that megalomaniac old geezer took over the movie. DiCaprio is on his way up and up, but Scorsese has pretty much reached the ceiling of his own capability. I say DiCaprio can do far better than DeNiro when he’s matched with a different director(s).

  14. Coops on October 22nd, 2006 7:23 pm

Oh don’t start the whole “Infernal Affair” Vs “the Departed” debate. That was going on forever in the IMDB reviews. Why can’t they stand as two seperate movies? Most people seem to think there were too many changes in the “re-make” anyway.

  15. John H on October 22nd, 2006 9:40 pm

Your whole premise is shot. For your arguments/comparisons to be valid we must take a gigantic leap of faith and assume that Dicaprio can actually act. He can’t.

He also can’t do accents. Anyone see his trailer for Blood Diamond? Positively laughable.

  16. cutebanana on October 23rd, 2006 4:11 am

leo’s no match for good ‘ol de niro. what Taxi Driver and you will see the genius in de niro…

  17. Carter101 on October 23rd, 2006 4:49 am

You’re kidding me? You would choose Brad Pitt? He’s the worst actor of all time, and compared to Norton..pfft, seriously you know nothing about movies. I stopped reading after the Brad thing.

  18. Diem ONe on October 23rd, 2006 9:34 am

    @ John H===

Lol my whole premise is shot just because he cant do accents???

So couldnt act in the “Aviator”… couldnt act in “gangs of new york”.. couldnt act in “This Boys life”…couldnt act in “whats eating gilbert grape” couldnt act in “Catch me if you can” as well as “The Departed”. You know what your right. And to only think that he couldnt act in four movies in a row. It sounds like you need to get off of DeNiros dick and realize that he is taking easy rolls because he doesnt feel like working anymore. He will probably make one more good movie and that will be that.

  20. Adunn on October 23rd, 2006 8:10 pm

I would say over all De niro has had a better career, but lets just look at one thing as far as acting goes. That man has never strectched in his LIFE even as the frankenstein monster he was the same character as in goodfellas. I love De niro but lets stop saying he is #1, when there are quite a few actors that can perform circles around him

Also here is why Leo is the protege now…..MONEY the departed is the 1st time Scorsese has broken 30 million in a weekend…EVER, the departed made more on its opening Saturday then Cape fear did in it’s entire opening weekend.

Sorry for the rant, it just gets me fired up, when people get all gushy over actors like nicholsen, pacino, or de niro.
    Flame away

  21. max on October 24th, 2006 12:18 pm

“That man has never strectched in his LIFE…”

Are you kidding? From Bang the Drum Slowly (catcher) to Godfather II (mobster) to Deer Hunter (soldier) to Taxi Driver (Vietnam vet) to True Confessions (priest) to The Last Tycoon (producer) to Awakenings (catatonic patient) to Raging Bull (boxer) to King of Comedy (obsessed fan) to Angel Heart (devil) to Cape Fear (psycho) to Brazil (terrorist) to Midnight Run (bounty hunter) to Wag the Dog (spin doctor)…you don’t call that a stretch? He’s done both comedy and drama successfully. And I believe he’s got a few more great roles left in him. As for DiCaprio, he’s got a long way to go to be ranked alongside De Niro.

  22. compguybri on October 24th, 2006 1:53 pm

DeNiro is a legend and DiCarprio is a great ‘new generation’ actor, but for my money, I would choose Johnny Depp over either of them. I feel DeNiro was great in his prime, but is way over the hill now… As for DiCaprio, he has the main-stream name recognition, but can’t act his way out of a paper bag when compared to Johnny Depp.

  23. cobr@ on October 27th, 2006 3:40 pm

you forgot casino, a contender with good fellas

  24. Shane on January 2nd, 2007 5:11 pm

I would say DiCaprio has way to go to being campared to De Niro all though we may look back on The Aviator or The Departed differently in 10 - 20 years. I think that De Niro is a “Legend” it doesn’t matter if he’s made some shit movies too. DiCaprio is on his way up but he’s not there yet. So in till they are both long dead I don’t think we can make a fair camparison.

i cannot believe that someone just said that leo cannot do the accents. what do you know, John H? If you want. go find a white South African/Zimbabwean to talk to and you will know that Leo did a great job in Blood Diamond. Not everyone in the world has to have an American accent, alright?

  27. #1 FAN OF LEO on June 20th, 2007 9:47 pm

LEO IS SO HOT AND THAT’S RIGHT! HE CAN DO THE ACCENTS BUT I GOT A FRIEND NAME SUMMER SHE WATCHES BLOOD DIAMOND AND THEN SHE LETTING ME BORROW IT

  28. Nikeeta on June 27th, 2007 4:28 am

No… Leo’s better than Deniro. Like look at even his earlier movies, What’s eating Gilbert Grape, the basketball Diaries, he’s amazing in those movies and he’s really young. I don’t know that much of Deniro, but in all his movies I’ve seen, his characters just seem really simular.

  29. the whitster on July 22nd, 2007 5:04 pm

Pulease not only is leo a awesome actor hes also a pretty…no wait a hot guy and ‘ive seen many of his movies and every single one of them rocked
and all of this is coming from a 12 year olds point of view as for deniro he can go crawl in a ditch with his old, tired, played out behind!

  30. leon on July 27th, 2007 7:54 am

LEONANDO IS SO SWEET WHEN HE WAS YOUNG AND I THINK LEONANDO IS GOING TO WIN THE AWARD.
