Classic Films: Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man

By: Rustycat | in: Movies |

Dead Man has all the right ingredients to be an indie classic.

When it comes to modern classics I think Dead Man defines what it means to be a perfect film. Jim Jarmusch, Johnny Depp, a soundtrack by Neil Young and a faultless script. You can’t beat that.

We all know Jim Jarmusch for his great indie films like “Stranger than Paradise”, “Down by Law”(another classic with Roberto Benigni and Tom Waits), “Mystery Train” and some of his latest works including “Coffee and Cigarettes” and “Broken Flowers” staring Bill Murray. Jim has won many prizes for his indie take on film-making and he’s known as one of the leading American filmmakers of his generation.

Dead Man follows William Blake, played by Johnny Depp, a small time accountant on the run after murdering a man. In the woods William encounters an Indian by the name of “Nobody” who prepares him for his journey into the spiritual world.

Dead Man demonstrates Jim’s better qualities in film making. Johnny Depp is phenomenal, I can’t get enough of Neil Young’s guitars and you can watch the film over and over and still discover new facts and thoughts.

If you haven’t seen it, a short trip to the DVD store is long overdue.

Dead Man is one of my favourite movies… and although I am a ridiculous Johnny Depp fan, it’s not all to do with that. The soundtrack is brilliant, and I love the twisted humour. Depp’s acting in the last few scenes is phenomenal.
