Is ‘The Class’ Becoming a 4-Trick Pony?
By: Charbarred | in: TV |Truth be told, I’m a bit lost with ‘The Class’. I loved the sitcom from the get go, great cast, great sense of humor, but recently it’s become a bit overwhelming. More so, it seems that certain elements are starting to repeat themselves, maybe a little too much.
So, I’ve compiled a list of tricks used in the show to help find out what it is that confuses me so:
1. The self invoked jokes in the end of every sentence: I think that is the essence of ‘The Class’. I can’t get enough of it, and it really defines the humor for the show.
2. The soap opera: This is where it gets a little tricky. An overall love story is always good, it keeps us interested in the characters and brings us back each week. However, ‘The Class’ gives us 3 for the price of 1. The Richie and Lina relationship takes center stage, which is fine. Then there is the Honk-Nicolle-Duncan triangle which is understandable. Is the Kat-Ethan, David and Maddie, Moulder and Scully thing really necessary though?
3. The characters never all meet: The first episode brought all these classmates together, making it seem like we’re into another ‘Friends’ style sitcom. It was a bit annoying at first to see that they don’t all become best friends and sip coffee together in ‘Central Perk’. As the show progressed, our characters are separated into groups that overlap occasionally. Since this isn’t ‘Heroes’, there might not be a need to bring them all together again. This might prove to be one of their finest tricks.
4. The gay husband joke: Enough is enough! It was funny at first. It was even funny the second time around, but it is getting old very fast. And now they are doing variations on it, introducing the gay father as well. Move on, unless you intend to actually have the guy come out of the closet (and let’s face it, this isn’t Dawson’s Creek), you pretty much covered this joke.
So overall they have some nice tricks up their sleeve. The question remains, whether these ideas will be recycled every week, or will the writers come up with fresh ways to make us laugh.
It’s hard to come up with a good sitcom nowadays, and ‘The Class’ is certainly one of the best offerings we’ve had in a while. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the show; after all it has been very consistent, especially when it comes to making us laugh. Let’s just hope ‘The Class’ doesn’t bury itself in repetition.

I thought the first episode was masterfully designed, and the dialogue was a great mixture of casual chatter and punchlines. As much as I wanted to like it, I have felt each episode has become less clever in humour, as you say, repeating the same jokes.
It’s almost like they spent months writing the first episode and then the others in just a few weeks.
I LOVE THE CLASS!..cnat wait to see what happens with ethan and kat..so hopefully there will be a second season..there better be!!..i love it!!!
I second that. Since I wrote this article The Class has become one of the best comedies on television. If I understand correctly, it’s not very likely to be renewed for a second season, which is a great shame.
