Top 5 Coen Brothers films
By: Charbarred | in: Movies |Joel and Ethan Coen are expected to drop their next film, ‘No Country for Old Men’ sometime next year. While we wait, let’s look back at some of the incredible films they’ve made. Maybe you missed one, maybe you’ve seen Big Lebowsky only ten times and want to see it again, or maybe you’re in the mood for watching them all, over again, I know I am.
Here goes:

1) “Big Lebowski”: I know it is a bit of cliché, but this has got to be the best Coen film and probably one of the best films ever. The Dude, Jeff Bridges gives a performance of a lifetime, John Goodman is a Shommer Shabbath, Tuturro is Jesus and poor Donnie has a heart attack. The ultimate stoner film not only for stoners.
Notable Quote: “It really ties the room together”
2) “Millers Crossing”: One of my favorite gangster films. I’ve seen it three times and it never gets boring. Gabriel Byrne, now about to star in HBO’s new series “Treatment”, stars as a middle man trying to keep the peace and quiet between two crime bosses. One of the more under-appreciated mafia films.
Notable Quote: “Old war wound. Acts up around morons.”

3) ”The Hudsucker Proxy“: I know this is a strange choice, but it’s one of my Coen favorites. Tim Robbins is the idiot behind the Hulla Hoop invention that gets caught in the middle of a stock market scheme run by Paul Newman. Jeniffer Jason Leigh is his fast talking southern reporter sidekick. This film is outrageously funny and witty.
Notable Quote: “You know, for kids.”

4) ”O’ Brother Where Art Thou?” A comedy that will bring tears to your eyes. Clooney, Tuturro and Nelson are three escaped convicts on the run to fame, searching for a hidden treasure with a relentless lawman on their tracks. The Coen’s have re-created a beautiful (and musical) version of the 1930’s.
Notable Quote: “Them syreens did this to Pete. They loved him up and turned him into a horny toad.”
5) ”Fargo“: An oddly accessible film, which rests mainly on a great script and Frances McDormand’s moving performance. This wacky crime-comedy introduces many classic characters and as many plot twists as you can fit in an hour and half. This film won the Coens, as well as McDormand, a much deserved Oscar.
Notable Quote: “peed three times already”
I probably should have done a top 10 instead of lamenting the exclusion of ‘Barton Fink’ and ‘Raising Arizona’…but that’s all we got time for…
