Website Review: Fab Channel the Real YouTube Killer
By: Rustycat | in: Music, Technology |For a music fan, sifting through the overwhelming abundance of YouTube videos may prove to be somewhat overwhelming. Among the babbling teenagers, America’s Funniest Home videos and the insanity, it’s very hard to find a good music video, let alone whole live gig.
If only there was a place where I could watch live concerts, get a chance to see Damien Rice, Bright Eyes, Stereophonics or The Magic Numbers taking to the stage in the comfort of my own home…Enter FabChannel - my new love affair.
While Google and YouTube’s partnership is making waves and everyone’s talking about the future of TV and Joost aka The Venice Project, over, at the Netherlands, hides an incredible website that streams video and sound from live performances
If you’ve ever visited Amsterdam (and managed to remember something) then you’d have heard of the Paradiso and the Melkweg, two of Europe’s most popular venues. FabChannel streams performances shot and recorded by its dedicated team, at those same venues, capturing live moments from some of the coolest and most famous bands like - The Black Keys, Penywise, Audio Bullys, Killing Joke, Simple Minds, Low, the legendary John Cale (recommended), Ani Difranco, Explosions In The Sky and even Body Count. And if that’s not enough to get your head spinning, you can slide down their archives list, in this beautifully crafted site, and discover some great acts you’ve never seen or heard before - in live action!
Their design and user interface deserve a trophy. I can’t get over the thing where you touch a video thumbnail and it starts playing the concert. Their video player is second to none, and the content…well, let’s just say this isn’t your run of the mill 5 minute low quality YouTube clip.
When you enter the website press ‘More Highlights’ to see thumbnails of all the current concerts showing, I’m sure you’ll be as amazed as I am. With over 400 concerts streaming in their entirety for free viewer access, this has got to be one of the biggest internet music suppliers available today.
Truth be told; it got me in the mood for a good concert… If only I were in Amsterdam…

Fabchannel releases unique ‘embedded’ concert player
Today Fabchannel releases a unique new service, the Fabplayer Beta. The Fabplayer enables music fans to integrate concert videos on their blogs, community profiles, websites and desktops.
The Fabplayer is the very first ‘embedded’ player that makes live content available to fans all over the world. Not centralised in one place, but where the fans gather online. It provides superior, full-screen video quality and allows users to program a personalised channel with their favourite songs from the Fabchannel archive. With these features, Fabchannel is one step ahead of the players of Youtube and Google, which can only play one video at a time in moderate quality.
With the Fabplayer, Fabchannel does not only serve the users of social networks, but also the users of other popular online formats. From MySpace over blogs and band websites to widgets/gadgets on your desktop.
Justin Kniest, CEO of Fabchannel: “The Fabplayer is the ultimate tool for music fans to share their taste in music and to keep up with the best live music in the world. The Fabplayer is the product of our longstanding cooperation with record labels, venues, promoters, artists and users. This is a win-win for all of them.”
How does it work? Create a profile on Fabchannel.com. Pick your favourites of each concert and create a custom playlist. Generate a HTML code by one click on a button and integrate your personal ‘Fabchannel’ into your blog, community profile or desktop.
With the Fabplayer Beta, Fabchannel once more proves to be a world player in the field of online video and strengthens its position as the live music platform of the world.
That’s an awesome feature…I’m sure we’ll make great use of it in the future.
Hi all!
I found a music concert site which is pretty cool: YouSwitch.tv
You can look at four video streams simultaneously with 4 different camera angles during a live show. You just have to choose the stream you want to watch. (if you want to see the drummer, the guitarist during a solo…) The nice thing is, switching allows you also to create a mixture of individual streams, and thus, you build your own montage of the pre-recorded concert and keep it. It seems that they are only in the beta testing version of the site and the final design will be available soon with more exclusive artist performances. It’ll be cool to direct your favourite band concert footage, you don’t need to have a production truck.
Cheers
