Phonograph – The New Saviours of Alt-Country

By: Charbarred | in: Music |

New York quintet Phonograph are getting a lot of attention lately. Their new self titled album is out in February, and already many magazines are gushing about their music. Is this that good? Yes, it’s that good!

Phonograph

Singer Matthew Welsh sounds like a cross between Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. In their music the band pays tribute to their elders (Dylan, The Byrds), while not missing out on their contemporaries, namely Wilco and Sparklehorse.  Production wise, not a beat is skipped, welding guitars, moogs, e-bows, electronics, jazz and just about anything you can throw at a proper studio album.
But what separates the men from the boys is the song-writing.  Welsh knows how to put a melody together, not giving in to the usual bluesy 3-chord progression expected of this genre. Lyrically love often ends up as the subject, but the musicality and impressive performances help in swaying it from obvious paths.
If you want a piece of contemporary Americana, that puts most current artists to shame, this is the album for you.
It’s out on February 13th on Arclight Records.
