Song of the Week

By: Charbarred | in: Music |

The Donut Hole

We’re trying on a new feature called “Song of the Week”. Every week each of our writers will share the song that made his week just a little bit brighter. The idea is to make this a regular Friday thing, providing we actually manage to stick to a plan.

Charbarred
While You Were Sleeping” by Elvis Perkins
Sheer laziness prevented me from reviewing Elvis Perkins’ wonderful album “Ash Wednesday”. This is the opening track for the album and it serves well in showing man’s triumph over machine. No studio trickery, no distortions, just an acoustic guitar, a wonderful band, a great voice and most importantly beautiful song-writing. I tend to get sick of songs after a few times, but this one seems to be haunting me all week.

Kendall
Another Girl” by Sleeping in the Aviary
Something about music that hasn’t gone through tons of production, with simple and honest lyrics always stands out. This is a song that even the most rudimentary guitar player could pound out in a few minutes, but there is something mighty appealing about it. More new young punk bands need to remember their roots like Sleeping in the Aviary.

Alibastard
Let Her Go” by Tiger City
You will never hear a song more convincingly and earnestly 80s. Production that sounds two parts Quincy Jones, one part Brian Eno, vocals a more falsetto Hall and Oates and a beat that carries on in lonely radio parallel universe after vocals run out (as if to say, “we like this kind of music FOR REAL”) its not surprising that Tiger City lists Steely Dan, Talking Heads and Prince as their major influences. Harkening to ghostly romance and sexy ether, and unabashed to rip guitar licks like something off of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and not even crack a smirk, this band gets the award for dousing my week in daydream, shadowy rosewater, true love side pony-tailed girls and acid washed jeans that burn and make you bite your lip.

D Thompson
Donut Man” by The Dickies
The Dickies have changed a lot over the years but they remain one of the greatest bands no one has ever heard of. Thanks to my college roommate, Frank Valdez (I owe you one buddy!) I started listening to their unique pop punk meets the chipmunks sound back in the 80’s. “Donut Man” is off their 2001 album All This and Puppet Stew a catchy number about the proprietor of one of LA’s five Donut Hole shops. One’s still standing and that’s not the one this song’s about. The Dickies at their best have an unfailing ability to make me a very happy man.

RustyCat
Horses in the Sky” by A Silver Mt. Zion

Oh my broken lamb
I worry when you cry
Baby’s gonna fetch ya
Horses in the sky

With an opening phrase like that, it’s clear how the guys from A Silver Mt. Zion climbed to the top my personal playlist chart this week. The song comprises of one of those unique melodies that take you inside the writer’s innermost thoughts and feelings. It’s also one of Silver Mt. Zion’s catchiest tunes.

Well great idea guys! Great diversity in the tracks as well and all have merits, I don’t think there is a duff one! I’m torn between the Elvis Perkin track and Let Her Go by Tiger City, which for me just comes out on top with a great chorus!

Good choices guys, im really digging the new one from BRMC - Weapon of Choice. Seems like a perfect mix of their debut stuff I loved and Howl. If the rest of the disc is this good, well, im ready….

Wow, that was a hard choice, all the songs you put were great! But I think my fav was Tiger City’s “Let her go”…I dig 80s style and I loved the way Alibastard reveiewed it! That Police-esque stopped bass (some slap would have been perfect for the occasion!), that decadent end-of-the party feeling…I can already picture myself amidst a melancholic crowd of people with incredibly big shoulder paddings and tight-fitting fuxia trousers, women with triangular earrings slowly waving their back-combed hair around while holding an empty glass of champagne…low lights and this soothing music. Too good, Cutting Crew and Brian Ferry are back…:)

Keep up the ijmpressive work, ciao! :D

I had to decide between Tiger City and Elvis Perkins, and I pick ‘While You Were Sleeping’; I’ve had enough of high pitched voices this past week. Stripped down songs always work for me, but Perkins’s voice is the right match for this story set to music.

Those are some interesting picks. To be honest I go for female vocalists when I listen to music. Right now I have the soundtrack to the broadway musical Wicked on heavy iPod rotation.

I am wrapped up in Wintersleep right now. I just saw them in Boston and they rocked really hard. My interview will be up shortly.

Here is the post I wrote about them recently and here is their song, “Fog.
