Song of the Week - March 23

Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his week just a little bit brighter…

“The Boho Dance” by Bjork
The new tribute album for Joni Mitchell is due April 24th. I had a chance to listen to some of the covers on it by such artists as Sarah McLachlan, Sufjan Stevens, Emmylou Harris, Annie Lennox and Elvis Costello. All pretty good covers, some better than others of course. The second best song is Prince’s cover of ‘A Case of You’. But the song of the week is definitely Bjork’s cover of ‘The Boho Dance’, beautifully done, have a listen, overall the album is not amazing, but it’ll do for easy listening at work.

“Don’t Let Him Waste Your Time” by Jarvis Cocker
I miss Pulp. This will certainly do as a replacement, even though it sounds nothing like Jarvis Cocker’s best known project. The guitars almost remind me of smartly used horns, but aren’t horns at all. I had read that it was suggested he do a solo album to gain enough money to purchase a home to reitre too. I hope this isn’t the case. I haven’t heard the rest of this album yet, but I will surely be picking it up soon.
D Thompson
“The Killer’s Vanilla” by Amon Tobin
A friend of mine once told me that I liked minor chords. I’m no musician so I really had no idea what he was talking about and even now I still couldn’t tell you if I’m listening to one or not. However, when I hear a song as beautifull and melancholic as “The Killer’s Vanilla” I suspect I am. Amon Tobin takes this dirge-like piece and just as it threatens to become one of those numbers you close your eyes and sway to, adds a fantastically over-complicated drum pattern. This is from Tobin’s excellent new album “Foley Room” on the bossly named Ninja Tunes label.

“Something Was Wrong” by Element of Crime
Up until a few days ago I was sure that every household in the world owns at least one copy of Element of Crime’s superior live album “Crime Pays”. It turns out that except for what seems to be a German entry in Wikipedia and a bunch CD shops, Google declared them the most obscure band in existence. With that knowledge I excluded them from my solos piece, assuming no one will know what I’m talking about. That being said, I was longing for that saxophone solo all week. Great track!

“Born Under Punches” by Talking Heads
Unrelenting polyrhythms pop in some sonic future Africa, the only variations within the song being David Byrne’s schitzofrenic vocal progressions. From conversational exclaimations (”Take a look at these hands!”) to the soothing interior monologue of a small chorus of Byrnes (”I just want to breathe…”) to the group consensous chant (”Goes on, and the beat goes on!), the song eventually amasses all its characters in an exquisite soup of funk, croaks gutteral like bullfrogs and floats in some dream ether like the cathedrial pleas of priests. What a song. What a week. The heat goes on.
So what’s your song of the week?

You have to absolutely love Born Under Punches - and what a dramatic live video!
Click the link and head over to my artist of the Week TIM WILLIAMS and song of the Week “THE HAT.”
This week you all chose tracks so beautiful that is it almost impossible for me to pick one… so I’ll go for an ex aequo: a song I already knew, by one of my favourite gropus ever - the immortal Talking Heads - and another that was new to me, “Something was wrong”. I can never get enough of TH’s experimental psychedelic sound, David Byrne anxious yellings and most of all Tina Weymouth’s slappy bass… And what more to say about Element of Crime? A hoarse whispering voice suddenly covered by a majestic warm sax… An amazing discovering for me, thanks Char!
Of course you do realize Giovana that you have just crushed D Thompson’s spirit! For 2 straight weeks you were his one major ally and now he’s all alone in dark no longer safe in the knowledge that his Italian saviour will back him up
I think that in Europe you still have a chance to find Element of Crime CD’s. The live album is highly recommended.
In D’s defense I haven’t been able to get that song to load on two different computers.
hmm…It works for me. Anyone else had any trouble playing any of the songs?
Actually, every week there’s been a song that wouldn’t open for me. this week’s honors go to [drum roll] Something Was Wrong by Element Of Crime, I figured it was my lousy DSL connection, all part of being cast into the outer darkness to drift, friendless, on a sea of melancholy sorrowful misery. Weep!
Well he we are again…but this week finds me in a blue mood..so firstly yes..the Tobin track wouldn’t play for me either and I gave up waiting for Youtube..sorry…so for me by this weeks track is by the ever so talented Bjork.
Actually my personal track of the week is from a few years ago..Damage - featuring David Sylvian and Robert Fripp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0Q7N6QLYxc
very nice songs! i’ll go for bjork though. she’s always been pretty cool
Love that Jarvis Cocker song. Was a huge Pulp fan but like this more up-tempo Cocker.
You should check out the video for the Jarvis song…really creative stuff.

Hey, once again I do agree with D Thompson choice…and I also think I have to “apologise” with him about not supporting him this week, but the reason was, as it has already been noticed, that I didn’t manage to listen to his track…I listened it today and it just knocked me out…hope you are not crying alone in a dark corner any more!
*sniff* I’m OK. LOL! Next week, Clay Akin!
