Song of the Week - March 30
By: Charbarred | in: Music |
Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his week just a little bit brighter…

“April Fool” by Sharon Lewis
I had the pleasure of sharing a bill with the wonderful Sharon Lewis the other night. It was a somewhat stressful evening, by the end of which I wasn’t really up for listening to any more music. Sharon took to the stage and started singing this song. Needless to say, we were all sitting there mesmerised for the rest of her set. Her album is up for sale on her website, it’s really recommended. Coincidentally April Fool’s Day is just around the corner…

“Petersburg, Liberty Theater, 1914” by Swan Lake
Not that any of Dan Bejar’s lyrics are easily explained or understood, but this song has the indie supergroup of Bejar (Destroyer), Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes) and Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade) combining a sweet sounding openning montra with the electric unrest of a Hammond, dissolves into a nearly spoken word rant about demons and boyfriends (matched by a quaintly spotty guitar flourish meanwhile), and ends in a xylophone riff that sounds like it could have come out of an exhaultant moment in a John Carpenter film. Give it several listens.

“Blue Bird Tattoo” by Circe Link
Searching desperately for a list of color metaphors, I stumbled onto The Word Nerds, two guys who have a podcast about, well, words. There in their archive was a program all about color metaphors featuring this great country swing number by the utterly unknown Circe Link. “Blue Bird Tattoo” sounds like Circe is less a singer than a channeler of Patsy Cline. Damn you Word Nerds! I can’t stop playing this song! I’m listening to it as I type this up..and I’m restarting it…Now.

“The Strings Of North Egg” by Innaway
I was playing around with my iPod last week and I discovered this amazing album I’ve totally forgotten about. I meant to do a whole write-up about the band, but I couldn’t get sufficient information. Looks like their official site has been sold for scraps, but their record company has been reporting they are working on a new album (there’s a demo on their MySpace page which sounds amazing). In any case, Innaway’s self titled debut is heaven for us indie (and Pink Floyd) fans. Have a listen, it’s well worth sticking around till the end of the track.

“Your Momma” by Kennedy
A friend of mine sent me to Kennedy’s website, and to his MySpace page, and told me I might find him interesting. I did, to say the least. This guy is my new idol. Drinking, smoking, bitch slapping Eminem, and loving moms. It’s a mixture of rock, disco, and humor, but I have the sneaky suspicion that he is serious. I can’t believe for the life of me that this is not a huge hit.
So what’s your song of the week?

Alibastard - nice one!
I actually liked all the songs this week. Good stuff guys.
Great website, I shall return..
My pick for the week is definitely Rusty-oriented: “The Strings of North Egg” is spellbinding, I had been craving for such an intense track for ages! All I am looking for in music is right there: echoes of Atom Heart Mother’s soothing rhythms (sooo Pink Floydian, Rusty, I totally agree with you!), a vague Ok Computer coldness and that dreamlike sadness that only Air can inspire in their albums… A simple calm beginning that reminds me of Karma Police slowly evolves to a distant fairylike sound (my kingdom for a chorus like that) briskly interrupted by a progression of slightly distorted guitars… Enrapturing.
All those who think we should quit and let Giovanna run this site, please say Aye!
(and thanks Peety, looking forward to your next visit)
Good choices but Im going with The National - Fake Empire
I thought Supertramp and Pink Floyd had a baby that sounded, in a way, like Innaway. Having a bit of a wordplay here.
I liked most of the songs. Wasn’t able to listen to Kendall’s and Alibastard’s recommendations. The tracks kept buffering forever. My own pick of the week would be ‘Dil Ki Doya’ from the great album REAL SUGAR. The singer is Paban Das Baul whose baul songs were re-mixed for the Western ears. My ears are Eastern made, but my taste is for Western flavored everything so this album got a lot of plays on my iPod. I wish I could share the song with you guys. Here’s the link to the album’s info on Google, if you don’t mind this link.

Aye.
Giovanna, I’m glad you liked Innaway, listen to the whole album, you’ll find many surprises.
Citizen King - “Better Days”
I think most songs are pretty good. Thanks for sharing.
