Living the Lie: Meet The Riches

By: Charbarred | in: TV |

We’re all just “buffers”, you know…
I mean, have a look at the Malloys. They’re “Travelers”, what some may call white Gypsies. This family of con-artists, used to live off the grid, stealing and lying their way into existence. After being shunned by their community for refusing an arranged marriage and stealing the family fortune, they’re on the road again.
Mommy, who’s just been released from prison sporting a trendy smack habit, wants to go back and apologize. Daddy, on the other hand gets the family to assume the identity of a couple of they’ve accidentally killed. So what does a dysfunctional family who’s been leading a life of crime for many years do? They try to steal the American dream.

The Riches

Of course the psycho, pregnant woman beating, head of the family is hot on their trail. But does that scare them? It does, but not as much as moving into “bufferville” – widely known to us buffers as the suburbs. There, daddy cons his way into a high paying position as a lawyer. Mommy even tries to be a dental hygienist, and the kids are thrown into the ultimate survival test – high school.
So what is it with television lately? Why are so many families living the lie? While “Desperate Housewives” and “Weeds” take a stab at the suburban hell, they’re not the only ones out there. Look at Toni Soprano – a lovable yet deranged individual who heads the mob in Jersey. After a day of murder and extortion, he likes to come home to his suburban family and live like us Buffers.

The Riches

And while we’re on the subject, how about Bill Henrickson? Sure, he’s a polygamist, enjoying the affection of three wives…But does he live with his fellow polygamists on the preservation? Nope, he has three houses in the heart of Salt Lake City’s Mormon community. The kids and the wives have to constantly lie to their neighbors and friend, but more importantly, they all get to live among us.
So I guess it’s not that bad being a “buffer” after all. Looks like even the most unique families who perceive us as easy targets actually want to be us.
And in case you’re wondering, “The Riches” is an excellent show on the F/X network. If you haven’t watched it yet, you’ve missed out on some real quality television. Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver lead the cast (Southern accents and all) of this darkly comic experience that is not to be missed.
So come on…There is nothing like getting back home from work, and flipping the TV on. Sit back, and watch the Malloys pose as “The Riches”, there’s no harm in that. At the end of the day, we’re all just “buffers”, you know.

    Great series!

A bit odd at times, in the beggining I thought I was in for a comedy, but it turned out to be more of a drama instead.

    Great acting too.

Yeah, it gets really dark at times…but still manages some very funny moments.

The suburbs are a place of darkness shrouded in Martha Stewart designer sheets. I wish they showed more shows like this.

That would be too scary, you need some entertainment every once in a while. Saying that, small towns are even scarier…think Twin Peaks or Northern Exposure :-)

  5. Kendall on April 12th, 2007 12:16 pm

    Northern Exposure is NOT scary.

Are you kidding? To be trapped in this dark and icy town with all those weirdows…brr….

I lived in a town not much bigger, and every bit as cold most of my life. Didn’t have as nights as long, but it would go for weeks at a time without being sunny. And there were certainly some interesting folks. It’s weird but kind of charming.

Truth is I’d like to live in one of those towns one day…

I am trying to learn the name of the band or song that is in the outro to an episode of the riches. It is Season 2, Episode 4, Slums of Bayou.

  15. anonmyous on April 20th, 2008 11:53 am

In episode 4, season 2, its “Start A War” by The National. They are one of my favorite bands. Their best song is Fake Empire.

Correction. I was thinking of a different song. That song in episode 4 is by Nada Surf. Does anyone know the song that plays in every season 2 episode in the credits? Its killing me. PLEASE TELL ME.
