Song of the Week - May 11

By: Charbarred | in: Music |

Attack Formation

Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his week just a little bit brighter…

Kendall
Similar Sideways Glance” by Attack Formation
Attack Formation is an interesting band, that in they are a band that is not a band, but a bunch of random contributors that donate their efforts to the cause at different levels. Only 5 of the 13 tracks on the album are recorded by the band as a whole. The other 8 tracks are recorded by individual contributors. “Similar Sideways Glance” is a track that is full of odd Harmony, and guitars that take a backseat to what I think is a glockenspiel.

RustyCat
Hello Cowgirl In The Sand” by Neil Young
Every week I compare my selection to Neil Young. This time around I thought it’d be a nice change to actually plugg Neil. His album Live at the Massey 1970 came out a month ago and it’s one of his best recorded performances. Neil really captured the moment in my all time fav Neil song Cowgirl in the Sand. Have a listen:

Alibastard
Heartbeats” by The Knife
I can’t really argue with the dynamic, 80s and yet actually sexy production on Swedish art-punk electronic sexpots The Knife. And even though I first heard this song exactly a year ago, I almost permanently equate it with the prowling rock club nights of urban summer. And, of course, Cindy Lauper.

Charbarred
Breaking The Turtle” by The Narrator
It’s been a mad mad week. So mad that I didn’t even have time to write my weekly album review. If I could spare a couple of hours, I would probably review The Narrator’s new album All That to the Wall. This Chicago outfit really impressed me with their album, and Breaking The Turtle is my favorite track. It sounds like an anthem to something, but I just can’t put my finger on it…didn’t even notice there was no bass on the track.

Shrir Lior

The All Overs” by Samantha King
Having just returned from Nashville, I feel that a Country number is in order. I’m not a big fan of the Country genre but I have a deep appreciation for the craft of writing Country songs. In fact, it is a rather lucrative occupation if you’re good. Samantha King is a recent discovery of mine.

D Thompson

Snanat” by Minimal Compact
I’d apologize for presenting yet another track from 1985 if this song wasn’t so spectacularly good. Minimal Compact, on the Belgian label Crammed Discs, was one of those semi-gothic bands we used to call “4A.D.” after the indie label which sported acts like Dead Can Dance and The Cocteau Twins. “Sananat”, my favorite song on their first album Raging Souls, is sung in some sort of middle eastern language for which a translation has never been provided. I have no idea what this song is about, but I ‘ve loved the way it sounds for (gulp) twenty-two years.Oh well, I guess it’s welcome To another edition of ‘Music History With Granpa D’.

So what’s your song of the week?

    Great selections this week guys.
Rusty - I would have chosen A Man Needs a Maid. It’s really cool to hear Young tell the whole story behind it and it’s a very different version of what ended up on the album (which also breaks into “Old Man” in the end. Still, this is one of the best live albums I’ve heard.
Lior - Straight up country can be cheesy as hell, but this tune really made me happy
Kendall - Great discovery, I really love this tune
D Thompson - How a guy from Oregon knows a cult Israeli band that worked in Europe in the 80’s still baffles me.
Alibastard - Great choice. Did you know this is a cover song? It’s originally by Jose Gonzalez. Have a listen to the original:

Man Needs a Maid actually goes in to Heart of Gold..
It actually is my favorite track but it takes a minute and a half to get going so I thought people would be five blogs away by then.. :-)

    Nice song Lior…she’s fun.
D - Minimal Compact are a great band, thx for reminding me they existed..they’re actually Israeli, Berry (guitarist) is really successful http://berry.co.il/video.htm

Sorry Rusty, I meant ‘Heart of Gold’

Got to give the plugg to Neil Young live. I hosted the theme to the Dead Man movie theme some time back and it has the same guitar picking and pacing. Instrumental of course, but just as incredible.

    Minimal Compact!!!

At the age of twelve or so, Samy Birnbach (vox), an old friend of my mum, came to visit us in our home in Windsor. He brought with him about ten Minimal Compact records. I didn’t get it. It was awful.

My mum used to travel with her first husband’s band (Average White Band) in Europe along with Samy and Berry Sacharov. If I’m not mistaken, they all shared a flat in Amsterdam for several months. “Those were the days..” she recalls.

I’m listening to your picks. In the meantime, here’s my SOTW: a fab tune by Amy Winehouse called Rehab. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1l1qw_amy-winehouse-rehab

    That’s a cool vid Mozzer!
Lior, didn’t know you were rock royalty :-)

Kendall - Catcy tune. Never knew a glockenspiel could sound so hip!
rusty - I like it, Very heartfelt. I have a feeling this Neil Young character could go places. ;)
Alibastard - You’re dead on with your description of night club prowling, I get the same sensation. Great tune.
Char - I like how the last half basically becomes a totally different song. I actually liked it better than the first half.
Lior - Great pick, very upbeat. Though the song only hints at it, King seems to have quite a voice. Must great to see her live.
Dthompson - You knocked my retro-socks off with this one. I loved the cocteau twins and the 4AD bands during their heyday. Excellent selection! :)

Song of the Week - May 11 - The Plugg

More cool tunes picked by the writers from The Plugg.

I loved listening to Alibastard’s choice…I am crazy about these Scandinavian bands -Sigur Ros, Royksopp…and The Knife, of course! The singer voice leaves me breathless, so cold and metallic…and I have a weakness for synthesisers, so I just couldn’t help applauding your outstanding pick, Ali!
By the way, their track I like the most is “Marble House”, so Bjork-like + Air…

And Rusty…I totally saw that coming, I knew you would plug Young sooner or later here…and that song is sheer brilliance!

Hey guys, sorry to be so late. Thanks for your kind words on Sananat, and your equally kind comments on my knowledge of obscure and forgotten 80’s bands. And thanks for a slew of bitchen tunes! Good to be back. :)

  13. DThompson on May 17th, 2007 12:22 pm

Unfortunately my knowledge of obscure and forgotten 80’s bands is not so encyclopedic as to keep me from mis-stating that Raging Souls was Minimal Compact’s first album when it was actually their second. Deadly Weapons was their first album. My apologies to Minimal Compact.
