ModenaVOX – Transportation
By: Kendall | in: Music |
Modena Vox is a rock quintet out of Columbus, OH. The lineup is as follows:
• Anthony Timperman - Lead Vocals
• Daniel Harris - Guitar
• J.J. DeLibera - Guitar
• Thomas Bragg - Bass
• Michael Savage – Drums
Their first album was a self produced EP entitled Strange Nights. Through this effort they were able to land a spot on the SXSW music bill for their fourth performance. Their first nationally televised performance was part of the Budweiser True Music effort. Soon after in 2006 they teamed up with Strokes Producer J.P.Bowersock to a second EP. All this leads to Modena Vox’s newly released LP called Transportation.
The Album is the type of rock music you would expect to come from a Midwest city, but not from the heartland. John Mellencamp they are not. It’s moody, effected, and is stroked with nods to bands like U2, The Cure, and possibly some Beatles or Oasis. It tends to be the instrumental tracks that draw you in, and then confront you with a gravely vocal from Timperman that forces you to turn your attention.

The first track of the album leaves one wondering where they are about to go for the next hour or so. The second track Show Me speaks the loudest in both texture and listen-ability. The opening seconds set a feeling of desperate motion that takes it’s time building to a bridge that leads back to a verse section. The chorus is a big pay-off as it takes off and quits dragging you along for the ride and finally brings you aboard and takes the edge off. Strange Nights, another stand out is carried by a dance rock beat that really forces the song and the listener into a groove with great pop hooks, and a structure that keeps you listening and guessing.
At times the band finds itself slipping a small amount towards an Ameircana sound, but not enough to lose the listener that is their for the mood. The guitar layering between Harris and DeLibera, the delays and variance form the typical Americana ABABCB structure will keep the hipsters engaged, and Midwest brethren open to something less typical. The album is a strong showing and from what has been said about the live show to support them, the band could find themselves with a solid following in a short time.

As a Midwesterner, I have been following Modena Vox for a while now. They rock! If you like the CD, I highly recommend seeing a live show. They are the real deal.
