The Acoustic Roundup: The Bowerbirds, Ola Podrida and Whip

The Bowerbirds

The Bowerbirds - Hymns for a Dark Horse
There’s been a lot of gushing in blog-land about The Bowerbirds. Rightfully so, I might add. Hailing from North Carolina this trio really pushes the boundaries of folk music. If you think there is just so much you can do with acoustic guitars, accordions and the occasional tapping of what sounds like a stick on a wooden floor, think again. In the end of the day, their original songwriting and fresh take on lyrics makes Hymns for a Dark Horse a really captivating creation.

Ola Podrida

Ola Podrida - Ola Podrida
Film composer David Wingo takes you on an amazing journey with Ola Podrida’s debut album. Lyrically it’s the equivalent of reading a good book, while musically you won’t be disappointed. Soft vocals and understated backing tracks that officially break into mini-explosions make this a perfect head-phones album. Nick Drake fans will find a kindred spirit in here, while surprisingly, Joseph Arthur aficionados will also feel right at home.

Whip

Whip - Blues for Losers
Whip is the singer for experimental folksters Timesbold. His solo album is a more personal continuation of his band’s efforts. Blues for Losers showcases his intimate shaky voice to the fullest, making you feel very close to the artist. With soft slide guitars, strange noises, and the occasional Tom Waits strangeness, Blues for Losers really surpasses its unfortunate title.

Talk about a unique sound experience. The first song was just awesome. It carries with it not only nice sound but this feeling of how folk should sound. The girl echoing on the background gives me the tingles. “Were only human, this at least we’ve learned” That is cool.

The second song is something I would like to listen to while relaxing at home at night after a tiring day of work. I’d love to have it playing while I sit on my couch looking at the ceiling. Dunno, but the soft vocals would surely pass as a lullaby to me. A great one at that.

The third song truly surpasses its title. The intro was a catcher and the vocals was just great. Makes one imagine the artist singing just beside you say on a bonfire in a chilly night.

These are how good songs make me feel. They take me places.

Cool selection Char. Hope to be taken to another journey soon. :)
