Song of the Week - June 1
By: Charbarred | in: Music |
Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his week just a little bit brighter…

Listened On by Lightning Dust
The Plugg inbox provides me with hours of great fun listening to new bands and filtering out junk mails. This week I got a press release from one of my favorite labels JagJaguwar about Lightning Dust. Black Mountain members Amber Webber and Joshua Wells are about to unleash their debut album as Lightning Dust. From what I’ve heard so far, it’s amazing and this song just has me pressing ‘play’ over and over again.

Loop Duplicate My Heart by Suburban Kids with Biblical Names
How much can an artist really love their music? Listen here to find out. Any computer-nerd music creator at home type of guy/girl will understand. Its quirky and awesome. This makes me want to go to their house and split a sixer and trade ideas.

Be Here Now by Silver Lakes
“If you live all you life in the past or you constantly plan for the future you will never be here now.” I picked this song because I’ve literally been listening to it all week. It just something I have to keep reminding myself.

The Con by Tegan and Sara
There’s lots of blog love for Tegan and Sara’s upcoming album, The Con.
Produced by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla, the record sounds more melancholy and mature than previous records.
What can I say, the twins made my week, I’ve always loved their music and can’t wait for the album due July 24th.

Walking the Blues by Johnny Cash
Is there a Johnny Cash song left in the world that everyone hasn’t heard a thousand times over? Perhaps this 1957 number. It’s pretty obscure and one of Cash’s blusier efforts. I don’t know why the songs I love labor in forgotten fields but they often do. Anyway, it’s a great song. Perhaps my affinity for it comes from having worn out my own shoes on several occasions in just such a manner.

Oh No by Lavender Diamond
Becky Stark’s naked sincerity and frank wordplay balances lightly with the textured but pretty simplified accompaniment of her band. Lavender Diamond’s recent Matador release embodies all these things, hippie idealism refigured for modern unrest, endless pursuits of true happiness, something a little bit sad, something a little bit crazy - all delicately assembled within sweet, fearlessly optimistic songs. Oh yeah I guess it helped that I just saw her in person last weekend. That’s probably what got me hooked.

A Good Year for the Robots by Coparck
It’s been a good week for new discoveries.. one in particular! Dutch, indie-mainstream group, Coparck impressed the pants off me with a unique music video motif - a typically English advertorial which I like - and a lovely website design. I have yet to delve into the contents of what they do but, so far, I love the packaging.
So what’s your song of the week?

What a nice batch of instantly repeatable songs. It’s like alternative top 40 week. Not a song didn’t hook me. In particular, Rusty, that trick at 1:18 is pretty nifty. Alibastard, I love the way that song starts out with the Queen “We Will Rock You” thing and then develops into something so beautifully magnificently different. Char, the low key bass organ really makes that song, just fantastic. Lior, cool song, cool vid, sad and happy all at the same time. Lee, Kendall, catchy stuff. I can’t pick out a favorite. If radio was this good I might actually start listening to it again.
I dig this post a lot - look forward to it.
IREALLY like the Tegan and Sara and Silver Lakes tracks!
I normally do not spend the time to check out the videos but am glad I did today. I liked Coparck a great deal. Crafty video, but again it was the music that stood out.
Johnny Cash is always a winner.
Could not get Kendall’s song (Biblical Kids track) to play.
First of all thanks for that Ryan (you can refresh the page and Kendall’s tune will load up)
Awesome songs this week…kind of a mellow feel to most of them, I’m loving it.
Kendall - Apart from having the best band name ever, this song really nails the process of home recording
Lee - This sentence is extrememly inspirational (and I love the tune)
Rusty - Tegan and Sara rule…their last album was a bit disappointing so it’s good to see they’re back in top form
D - Can’t go wrong with Johnny Cash
Lior - Amazing discovery with that video!
Yeah, hard to pick a favorite this week…I think I’ll just stick them all on my MP3 player and enjoy the rest of my day.
We should get a song of the week podcast going on!
I’ll set it up.
Any ideas? One week at a time or should I do a mix from all the SOTW’s..?
How about a song of the week player on the sidebar?
I’m for the Sidebar. Rusty, we need to just put together a kickass podcast in general.
Rusty, I was on The Onion’s offshoot The AV Club where they’ve just put up a list of “Sad Summer Songs” which reminded me of college when I read a Rolling Stone article about making the perfect Summer tape (back in the analog days). If we’re going to do a general podcast I vote for a summer mix thing. And by the way, I recommend that sad summer list there’s some excellent stuff on it (including The Beach Boy’s “Warmth Of The Sun”).

Listened On by Lightning Dust- I love her voice
Loop Duplicate My Heart by Suburban Kids with Biblical Names- I first heard this song back in February. Haven’t stopped listening to it since. “This makes me want to go to their house and split a sixer and trade ideas.” That reminds me of old times.
Be Here Now by Silver Lakes-“Take a good look at the picture around you. Is it what you painted or did it evolve?” What a great question.
The Con by Tegan and Sara- I heard Tegan and Sara a few years ago but for whatever reason I never really got into them. This makes me want to rethink my decision.
Walking the Blues by Johnny Cash- “If you ain’t got no money boy you gotta walk.” I’ve heard that one before. Nice find.
Oh No by Lavender Diamond- Great song from a great band.
A Good Year for the Robots by Coparck- I’m a huge fan of innovative music video. This was defiantly a winner.
I think the podcast should be one week a time. The sidebar sounds like a good idea too.
Ok, I’ll try to do two things.
1. A weekly podcast from all The Plugg contributors.
2. A sidebar radio that will play all the songs featured that week in articles and SOTW on The Plugg.
How does that sound?
Cool!
Sounds like the Johnny Depp of entertainment bloggs is moving up in the world!
Guys, a podcast with your week picks would be plain awesome. and if you all did it around a mic sharing a (few) sixpack(s) well, i guess transcendent would apply lol. good job at the plugg, i know your work for only a couple of weeks and my life would have been better if i found out about you sooner. greetings from Portugal.
Thanks Alex
I cant help but smile while listening too Suburban Kids - it’s as catchy as crabs!!..the lyrics of Lee H Silver Lakes almost made this my choice but in the end I chose Listened On by Lightning Dust..its takes me to a place of peace and tranquility…nuff said!
