Song of the Week - June 8

Song of the Week

Every week each of our writers shares the song that made his week just a little bit brighter…

I Used To Play The Euphonium by The Born Again Floozies
I chose this song by The Born Again Floozies because I too used to play the euphonium in a marching band. Also because they make such gleeful music with only two tap-dancers a guitar and the aforementioned euphonium. That’s a “tuba” for the non-band geeks out there.

D Thompson
The Glassmaker by Bel Canto
I discovered the Norwegian trio Bel Canto in 1990. Listening to this now, singer Anneli Drecker sounds perilously close to a mad scientist’s merger of Elizabeth Frasier and Kate Bush. But, since I like Cocteau Twins and love Kate, what’s not to enjoy about Bel Canto’s best song, “The Glassmaker”?

Alibastard
And Now The Curse of Marjorie by Nurses
This song, with its foreboding, soft organ and its throaty, worried vocals hypnotized me hard this week. There’s this on-off kind of trip-hop beat that sounds more atmospheric than techno wanna-be. The guitar does a grungie jig in the middle. And then the abrupt ending, leaving you hungry for more. Full Plugg album review to come.

Wanna Be by Dizzee Rascal (Featuring Lily Allen)
This guy has such a great way with words and phrasing that I can listen to him rapping over the sound of dishes being put in a cupboard. But if you do put a great backing track to his words, you’ve got yourself one amazing tune. Helium sounding Lily Allen does a great job playing second fiddle to the Maestro. She even gets to rap a little…

Everything Has Changed by Lucinda Williams
Legen…wait for it…dary alternative country folkster Lucinda Williams has recently released her new CD, West. This album has more of a mellow romantic sadness to it than her previous ones.
Caught her playing Everything Has Changed on Jay Leno the other night and I’ve been listening to it religiously all week.

Kendall
Lunatone by Tiger Army
Some say these guys are psychobilly. Some say punk. I probably lean more towards the latter, but I hear a lot of 80’s vocal influence on this record. The guitars are what you’d expect to hear on a modern punk album. The drums are dry and clean. The songs are quick and precise. This band has gone through several line-up changes since their inception in 1996, and some crazy misfortunes (more on that here) but this is nonetheless a strong record worth a listen.

A Day at the Office by Camp Clovenhoof
Office Space. Surely one of the best flicks ever made. Every time it comes into cable circulation, I promise myself to only watch a few minutes as I have seen it thirty times already. It’s like Star Wars or The Matrix or, uh, 9 1/2 Weeks. Well, the sun is shining and I have ants in my pants. I want the beach. I don’t want work. Yeaaaahhh.. about those TPS reports.. here is what Camp Clovenhoof has to say about it.

So what’s your song of the week?

Been a while since I really enjoyed SOTW so much. Awesome tunes guys
Lee: I don’t know where you pulled that one from, but it’s great. Also nice to learn a new word for tuba
Thompson: I never actually heard Bel Canto before, really hypnotizing stuff.
Alibastard: This was almost my song of the week. That Nurses album is shaping up to be one of my favorites.
RustyCat: Any song by Lucinda Williams is good with me.
Kendall: Really anthemic stuff. Love it.
Lior: I was pissing myself when you sent it yesterday. It gets a bit over the top towards the end, but still really funny. I never saw Office Space…maybe it’s about time I did.

This is the only place I get to check out new songs. Loved ‘Everything Has Changed’! I rarely repeat listen, but this one sticks with you. Thanks!

kudos the transition from Apollo to Bang - nice. This site makes work (not quite as bad as Office Space) bearable. Thanks!
