My Letter to Copeland
By: Lee H | in: Music |
This is the e-mail I sent the band Copeland after I recorded a song called Great Illusion:
I’m sure you guys are busy but I just wanted to tell you that I was inspired by your whole album but especially with the title track. So much so that I wrote some lyrics for it and reworked it into a slightly different song. If you find time I’d love it if you could listen to it and tell me what you think. It’s called “Great Illusion” It’s not for sale and I’m not getting any money from it. It was done strictly for the love of the song.
Thanks,
Lee

This is what the lead singer Aaron Marsh wrote me
back:
Hey Lee.
That was very cool to hear. I really enjoyed that. I enjoyed your lyrics. They remind me a bit of PM Dawn. That’s a huge compliment because I love their stuff. Anyway. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work.
~aaron
I’m not much of a PM Dawn fan, scratch that, I’m not even remotely a PM Dawn fan but he is so I took the compliment in the spirit it was given.
Copeland, if you don’t know, is a great band who’s current album Eat, Sleep Repeat was released last fall and has stayed in my music rotation every since. Definitely worth checking out.

OK, so is comparing a Hip Hip artist to PM Dawn the same as someone telling me my (rock) music sounds like Keane?
PM Dawn is cool. Charbarred, your music sounds EXACTLY like Keane…
Is there something wrong with Keane? I think they’re awesome. So, I guess I’m one more peg down on the cool board for liking Keane.
I”m just picking on charbarred.
Lee, that’s really cool that you worked up that song around their music. I’d have been afraid to even let Copeland know but they turned out to be really supportive.
Actually, I only have the vaguest clue who Keane is. Weren’t they that kid band who did “Mm-Bop”? For a sugary piece of pop tripe that song was catchy. Oh, no, that was Hansen. I need to rephrase my first sentence, it should read “Actually, I don’t have the vaguest clue who Keane is, just goofing myself.”
But I shouldn’t have. Lee’s done something here worth commenting on and praising and I was ignoring it in the opportunity to be a smart ass. Apologies Lee, my comment directly above stands.
So you got those 3 guys who call themselves Keane and sing cheesy lifeless songs. They got a drummer you wouldn’t recognize in a girl scout convention, no guitar, no bass meaning everything rests on the most uninspring pianist in music history and a lazy singer who who could at least make an effort an pick up a tambourine.
But what do I know, they sell millions and everyone seems to love them.
Lee, awesome track!
Lee, you should start doing this for all the bands you like until someone releases it as a single remix. Or wants to do a Jay-z/linkin park sort of thing.
I wasn’t really that scared to contact Copeland because I honestly thought they wouldn’t respond. I was actually more scared of posting the song less people think I’m self centered for putting my own music on here.
As far as doing this for all the bands I liked that can be tricky. Rock drums don’t always lend themselves to hip-hop very well. Although Bloc Party’s new song “The Prayer” might work pretty nicely. Me and Bloc Party… Now there’s a thought.
Thanks for the support guys.
