Rialto Revives Cinema Greats
By: Danielle | in: Movies |
Looks like Rialto Pictures is taking charge of reviving, restoring, re-marketing, and re-distributing some cinema greats from years’ past – Army of Shadows, Eyes Without a Face, Mafioso, The Battle of Algiers, The Third Man, and a host of others by renowned filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard and Federico Fellini.
Army of Shadows, made in 1969, won the New York Film Critics Circle award for best foreign film last year. Not bad, eh?! Rialto seems to be creating a buzz now, even though the company has been distributing classics for 10 years. Unfortunately, the only catch is finding a city and theater that embraces these artistic masterpieces, or a film festival that programs them into their schedules.

Rialto has even partnered with Criterion Collection to compliment the theatrical release with deluxe DVDs. So if you happen to be planning a trip to NYC between now and August 10th be sure to stop by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and check out their tribute to Rialto - “Rialto Pictures: Reviving Classic Cinema.” If not, go to www.rialtopictures.com and you can scroll through the films and see if they’re playing at a theater near you. But I have a feeling if interest keeps growing, then more theaters will want to catch on! In the meantime, I’m seriously debating hopping on a plane to NYC. Check it, check it…

Looks interesting. I love renting the Criterion DVD’s. If you can’t make it to NYC to see some of these great movies the least you can do to treat yourself to a good film is catch one of these on DVD:

What they do is buy the rights to redistribute classic films. They do all the digital remastering and package in many great bonus scenes and stuff.
