White Whale Records: Mohawk Lodge and Octoberman

Mohawk Lodge

I Just discovered a great indie label I didn’t know; White Whale Records.
I actually received an email which quoted “I’ll bet Neil Young would have loved these guys if he heard them…” Obviously, I gave it a listen and have been listening repeatedly since.
Mohawk Lodge, sways back and forth between loose and laid-back to rocking out. Their sophomore effort, Wildfires, on White Whale, features a cameo by Handsome Furs/Wolf Parade vocalist, Dan Boeckner who shares harmonies with Lodge front man Ryder Havdale.

Octoberman

Another great band to look out for are Octoberman. They’re releasing a new album August 21st called ‘Run from Safety’. Again with the Neil Young theme: “Embodying the sensibilities of Neil Young’s song craft and Jack Kerouac’s travelogues, These Trails [previous album] won widespread praise from dozens of publications. Just as Marc Morrissette’s penchant for melancholic vocals and melodic guitar work caught the ears of critics, it won the hearts of audiences.” They’re a great band, I’m definitely looking forward to the new album. You can catch the new single on their Myspace.

These two bands are brilliant. The only thing, I don’t see the Neil Young resemblence at all. Just because they have guitars and the occasional country-ish feel to their songs doesn’t mean they sound like Neil Young.

Also, doesn’t this Amazon plugin suck? It says Neil Young, but it recommends a Neil Gaiman book…

At fist listen Mohawk Lodge sound like a more then decent band, i especially like the guitar riffing and pitching vocals, but 1 track alone is not enough to form an opinion; their on the right track anyway. Octoberman isn’t quite my style, being more of a metal dude i kinda stay away from slow songs, despite this i can spot good vocals when i hear them; he seems a little bit limited thou’, he gives me the feeling he could let it rip a bit on X-pat, but he kinda restrains hilmself. Anyway best of luck to both of them.

I kinda agree with the notion that they don’t sound like Neil Young at all, but then again it has an alt country grunge feel to it..

So does Nickelback, but I’m sure Neil Young would kick you in the face if you tried to associate them with him.

Octoberman’s last album is technically really good - it’s just really sad. (Strong in this regard.) I keep thinking I will write it up, but I just haven’t found the time. I will have to look up Mohawk Lodge.

Thanks Rusty. I’m digging Mohawk Lounge, great sound on that track.

Charbarred: Yes, the Amazon plug-in is whacked sometimes. I use it on my site, and sometimes it makes for some questionable links, lol.
