G. W. Pabst’s Pandora’s Box

G. W. Pabst’s Pandora’s Box
The last movie I watched was, believe it or not “Pandora’s Box” (Serendipity baby) The 1929 silent film directed by G. W. Pabst and based on the plays of Frank Wedekind. Aside from a handful of Charlie Chaplin movies, I don’t think I’ve ever watched a silent movie from beginning to end before. It’s the story of a prostitute named Lulu who is irresistible to politicians, old men, lesbians, and even Jack the Ripper. It’s more than the “hooker with the heart of gold” story we hear so often nowadays. While we do see her use her sexuality to get what she wants we never despise her, and furthermore we don’t feel sorry for her. This is a testament to the acting of Louise Brooks and most actors of the silent film era, who had to convey all their emotions through their acting skills and couldn’t lean on the writing. The film also gets the Criterion treatment. You can choose between 4 different soundtracks.

Tom’s Shoes
Not too long ago I was the recipient of an Amazon Gift card. (Thanks Plugg!) What did I purchase with my new found wealth? A pair of Tom’s Shoes. For those not in the know Tom’s Shoes was founded by Blake Mycoskie’s life changing experiences in his travels to South America. The shoes are inspired by the traditional Argentinean shoe which is incredibly comfortable and comes in a variety of colors. The most important thing to know about Tom’s Shoes is that every time you buy a pair of Toms the company gives a pair to a child in South America on your behalf.

Cadence Weapon
I first heard the song “Sharks” when I downloaded the 2007 Pitchfork Music Festival Sampler for free (!!!) from emusic.com. I didn’t recognize the artist (Cadence Weapon?) so I googled him and found this video. Evidently he’s a 19 year old Edmonton, Alberta, Canada MC/producer/ music journalist, which explains why I’ve never heard of him. I find it funny that in the chorus he states “Stop biting my shit” for two reasons: 1) his sound is rather unique so I don’t think anyone could get away with stealing from him and 2) I don’t think anyone knows who he is to steal from him in the first place… at least not in America. Honestly, I think I like the video more than I do the song. You’ll see why within the first 30 seconds.
