The Movies You’re Missing Out on this Week
By: Rustycat | in: Movies |
Due to a clerical error (thanks a bunch Charbarred!) this post is being published now instead of last week. Nevertheless, here are the films that are rocking the movie theaters as we speak.
The Nanny Diaries
Directed by Shari Springer Berman and Roberto Pulcini. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Paul Giamatti, Alicia Keys and Laura Linney.
The Nanny Diaries is a new romantic comedy drama about a college student who goes to work as a nanny for a rich New York. While having to juggle her studies, a disfuctional family, a new romance and the brat she’s in charge of, Annie (Johansson) ends up in the elite and ritualistic culture of Manhattan’s Upper East Side — as remote from Annie’s suburban New Jersey upbringing as life in an Amazon tribal village. Choosing to duck out of real life, Annie accepts the position as a nanny for a wealthy family, referred to as simply “the X’s.” She quickly learns that life is not very rosy on the other side of the tax bracket.
The Hottest State
Directed by Ethan Hawke. Starring Mark Webber, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Laura Linney (again?!).
Looking at Hawkes’ previous directorial attempt the thought of him directing the screen version of one of his first novels might make viewers think twice. It might feel a bit overwhelming at first but from watching the trailer this looks like a nice enough Drama that could actually deliver. The best thing about his movies is the soundtrack for which Hawke recruited Cat Power, Willie Nelson, Bright Eyes, and others to record songs by musician Jesse Harris (the guy who co-wrote “Don’t Know Why” with Norah Jones and still managed to keep his cool).
The 11th Hour
Directed by Nadia and Leila Conners. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Produced and narrated by DiCaprio this enviromental Documentary gives Al Gores Powerpoint presentation (An Inconvenient Truth) another boost. The film explores how we arrived at the last moment of change for our ever dying ecosystem and tries to explain vairous solutions to dealing with it.
Closing Escrow
Directed by Armen Kaprelian and Kent G. Llewellyn. Starring Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ryan Smith and Bruce Thomas.
Looks like a promising Mockumentary is headed our way next week. Three quirky families seeking to buy their next home collide when trying to purchase the same property. Hilarity ensues and the bidding war tests the limits of their marriages and the resolve of their agents.
War
Directed by Lee Anthony Smith and Gregory J. Bradley. Starring Jet Li and Jason Statham.
For all you action buffs that feel like a good kick ass movie next weekend here’s a tale of an FBI agent out for revenge for his long lost partner who was murdered by a mysterious assassin known as “Rogue”. Here comes the tagline…..”Vengance is the ultimate weapon!”

Great!
So, are these the movies I missed out on last week, or the movies I’m STILL missing out on this week?
Rusty sent it to me 2 weeks ago to go over. It was to be published last Thursday with the title “Out this weekend”. For some reason I thought it needed editing and kept putting it off until I forgot about it. So here it is, unedited (except for the title and intro). I’m in the UK, so these movies will probably be out just in time for my retirement party in 30 years. They’re out in the US right now.
All will make worthy DVD rentals, as long as someone else is paying.
no to great movies, bad weeks for new movie releases. I mean I’m not the sort of dude that watches a lot of movies but even i can tell these are terrible movies, maybe not the one with Scarlet Johansson tho
Oh, I agree, you can’t call not seeing The Nanny Diaries “missing out”.
Though these movies look ok, they don’t look like the ones I’d line up in a theater for. I think the timing was just right. I might consider watching one of these in my home and I surely don’t feel like I am missing anything out.
That happens to me a lot too char. Only in my case, when I forget, I usually end up not publishing them anymore.
Cool list!
