Soutland Tales

Richard Kelly the director who brought us Donnie Darko back in 2001, which became an instant cult film, is finally at it again. Southland Tales is his upcoming November release.
I’ve been trying to sift through all the information on the web to get the lowdown and it’s not as easy as your normal Hollywood release. Here’s what I found:
Plot: Two quotes from Richard Kelly: “It’s a big, epic, political cartoon told with subversive humor” and “Well, maybe it’s like someone took mushrooms and read the Book of Revelation and had this crazy pop dream”.
I think you’re starting to get the picture.

Soutland Tales

The movie is a near futuristic experience about the end of the world. Set on July 4th 2008 two years after Texas has experienced a couple of nuclear attacks, a catastrophe which led America in to war. The Patriot Act has been upgraded to a new agency now called, USIdent which keeps tabs and censors just about everyone and everything. Fuel is replaced with what they’re calling liquid karma and the left wing is divided in to neo-Marxist cells. Or as Sarah Michelle Gellar, just one of the stars on this film, puts it: “Scientists are saying the future is going to be much more futuristic than we expected.” Oh and there will be black holes and space and time will fold.

The plot was actually divided in to six parts, three of them were released as graphic novel books and the other three make up the movie.
Part One: Two Roads Diverge (May 25, 2006)
Part Two: Fingerprints (September 15, 2006)
Part Three: The Mechanicals (January 31, 2007)
They have been collected together into one single volume:
Southland Tales: The Prelude Saga (360 pages, Graphitti Designs)
The titles of the parts in the movie are:
Part Four: Temptation Waits
Part Five: Memory Gospel
Part Six: Wave Of Mutilation

Cast: The cast includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, the Rock, Seann William Scott, Mandy Moore, Jon Lovitz, Kevin Smith, Justin Timberlake and many many more.

Videos: There been a lot of buzz since the Cannes Festival premier late 2006. There are no official trailers out yet but I did find a couple of clips from the movie on YouTube:

Southland Tales premiers in the US on November 9th and on December 7th in the UK.
