VIRV TV Launches High Quality Indie Music Channel

Talk of online TV has become a common thing lately but it seems like all the platforms launching are only supplying the same old solution: low quality video, often ridiculously stretched out all over the screen in a failed attempt to make it seem like quality video, either in a “create your own playlist from YouTube” or “choose a [lo-fi] video and play it on demand” experience. And there’s also some discussion about MTV’s integrity, especially since Britney’s lousy performance at the VMAs and the takeover of music video playlists by reality shows. I guess most of us rejected MTV a long time ago…

So what are we music fans to do?

I’m proud to introduce you to VIRV TV, the online indie music TV channel. For the first time, indie music lovers can tune-in to a high-quality, music video playlist on the web with truly sharp picture and crisp audio. The music web station, already broadcasting 24 hours a day, features hand-picked indie video clips by the likes of Bright Eyes, Fujiya & Miyagi, Architecture in Helsinki, Of Montreal, Dappled Cities, Aesop Rock, Cursive, Budos Band and many more. Now here’s the clincher: after you download a plug-in, you can view the channel 24 hours a day without having to customise a playlist - VIRV does this for you - and it’s free! The guys at VIRV have put together a broadcast quality, live video stream like no other. It’s exactly like watching TV.

Back to basics.

I’ve had long conversations about web TV with fellow bloggers and technology buffs. They claim that the internet has empowered us to “pick and choose” and avoid the monotony of passive, scheduled television, endorsing the demand for community and user interaction. I was the first guy in line to create playlists and chat about videos but, somewhere down the road, I got tired of it all and sought out a channel that will give me a cool TV station I can hit play and surf the web while it’s in the background. If something catches my attention, I just view the window it’s playing on and see who’s on. For me, now, it’s all about discovering new music rather than listening to the same old songs over and over again. Let other people do the filtering process - I want to sit back, watch and listen!

You can check out VIRV here and also on The Plugg’s homepage (it currently supports Windows users only. A Mac version is coming real soon…).
