The Cat Empire

Hi there, my name is Jen Wilson and I work for The Music Network magazine in little old Australia. Just to give you a bit of background, The Music Network is Australia’s only music industry trade publication and has been running since 1994. I’m the Editor, so I get the awesome job of checking out some of this country’s finest musicians week in, week out.

One such act I saw just last weekend - The Cat Empire. The name may be familiar to some of you but for those of you who haven’t yet experienced them, I suggest you do yourself a favour and check out www.myspace.com/thecatempire. Live, they are just something else. As an 8-piece band, they stretch themselves across countless genres, including funk, soul, reggae, jazz and blues - and just when you think you’ve seen it all, singer 1 (Felix) jumps on the percussion and bangs the crap out of the drums and singer 2 (Harry) grabs his trumpet and gives it a good belting. Just a handful of the reasons why they’ve just beaten You Am I’s record of the most sold-out concerts at Sydney’s 1,500 capacity Metro Theatre in a row (8 in 7 days, in case you were wondering).

Their third studio album as The Cat Empire, No Longer There, reached Gold sales after just two weeks after debuting at #2 on the ARIA charts.

And we wonder why.

Interesting mix of pop, hip-hop, and brit-pop. Even though they aren’t british. Welcome to the club!

I heard their song “Sly” sometime this year for the first time. I thought it was new until I found out only about a week ago that it came out in 2005. I need to keep up on my Australian soul, reggae, jazz, blues bands.
    Welcome to the fold Jen.
