MySpace To Try New (Free) Music Distribution Methods With Facebook Music Looming

MySpace

Over the next few months MySpace is said to begin testing a new way for consumers to get music on their site - for free, thanks to advertising.

From AdWeek:
“Next March, fans of punk band Pennywise can go to stores to buy the group’s ninth album. Or they can go to the MySpace profile of Textango, a mobile music distributor, and add it as a friend, which will allow them to download the entire album for free.”

This is an interesting combination of marketing (all they want you to do is ‘friend’ them?) and music distribution - one that could be very welcome in the music industry at a time when they struggle to pull themselves off the floor as artist after artist begin their exodus to self-distribution. SpiralFrog and the new RCRD LBL are exploring this ad-supported music idea as well.

But lets not forget this is not only about the music - MySpace itself likely realizes it has to test out some new strategies to maintain its user base when Facebook Music comes on line. That service has been rumored for months now and still no one seems quite sure what it will be (I’m hoping for some kind of Pandora-like experience), but you can bet it will be massive. As I’ve pointed out in the past, take a look at almost any network across Facebook, what’s the #1 interest across the board? Music.

They. Are. Coming.
