Song of the Week - November 23

AaRON

Every other week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter.

U-Turn (Lili) by AaRON
I’ve been listening to AaRON’s debut album, Artificial Animal Riding on Neverland, for the past week. This track was featured on the film, Je Vais Bien, Ne T’en Fais Pas, and from what I gather has brought the English duo known as AaRON to minor internet fame. So I’m happy to add another Plugg to rise to stardom by sharing this beautiful track with you guys. Check out the album it’s good.

D Thompson
Cowboys In Africa - Bush Tetras
While The Go-Go’s and The Bangles came to define the modern girl band sound, Bush Tetras went off on their own bass heavy tangent. The name of the song threw a lot of my friends at the time, but “Cowboys In Africa” is a bit of rumbling feedback-laced nirvana I never seem to tire of.

Mozzer Mozzer
And I Found This Boy - Maia Hirasawa
Hirasawa’s tale of a regrettable acquaintance may compel you to dance your worst Fosse imitation in your living room. Either way, just remember one thing: Jazz Hands!

Lee H Lee H
Sticky Chemical by Bobby Bare Jr’s Young Criminal Starvation League
This song is taken from Bobby Bare Jr.’s 2006 album “The Longest Meow” in which he recorded 11 songs in 11 hours with an 11 person band. This particular song has so many parts that it’s hard not to sing along to at least one of them before the song ends. I’m not sure exactly what the “sticky chemical” in my brain is but it sure is addictive.

Charbarred
Slow Day for the UFOs by The State of Samuel
This catchy number just caught me unaware this week. I can’t stop playing it, and I don’t know why. There’s something very comforting about this excellent Swedish act…or maybe it just reminds me of Guided by Voices for some odd reason…

Alibastard
Blues X-Man by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
An oldie but goodie, before these guys were a little more (and not unforgivingly) streamlined. Minimalist and cartoonish — to me, the Evil Dead of rock and roll (though maybe that’s just because Spencer reminds me of Bruce Cambell). Who can disregard the drawling near stream-of-consciousness Jehovah’s witness rant in the middle?

JenWillson JenWillson
Relativity by Grafton Primary
Triple J (the radio station) are absolutely slamming these guys – a promising electronica outfit following on the coattails of rising stars Midnight Juggernauts. Slightly kooky, but hey that’s what makes them so addictive! Who said the 80s were dead?

Kendall
Wild Mountain Nation by Blitzen Trapper
Blitzen Trapper was blazing it’s own trail for some time before eventually securing a spot on the Sub Pop roster. They are out on tour currently with Two Gallants, and it seems like a good match for a tour outing. Be watching for these guys to get a lot bigger, and be watching this video because it’s radical with a capital RAD.

So what’s your song of the week?

Amazing choices this week guys. NOW here’s your report card!

Rusty, I’m still shocked to read that you watched a French movie…or did you?

D Thompson, great tune, the bass line reminds me a bit of that 80’s band with the bald guy who sang Beds are Burning

Mozzer, Jazz hands indeed, nothing like a great tune to make you smile.

Lee, I can’t believe they recorded this with an 11 piece band in 11 days

Alibastard, I never noticed how much Bruce Campbell looks like John Spencer, it’s quite eerie

Jen, sorry I didn’t get the phrase “triple j are absolutely slamming these guys”. I also apologize for taking 10 minutes to understand your subsequent translation when you explained they’re “playing them heaps”…I’m a simple guy, you know… :-)

Kendall, I think Blitzen Trapper deserve way more attention than they’re getting…(awesome video as well)

That eighties band with the bald guy who sang Beds Are Burning was Midnight Oil. The bass line does sound sortof like them now that I think about it…
I like the extended instrumental end to your choice, Rusty. Kinda reminds me of ELO on a very good day.
Alibastard, has Jon Spencer ever put out a CD NOT worth buying?
Wicked cool song / video combination, Kendall.
And Jen, if anyone said the eighties are dead, it certainly wasn’t me. The eighties may never die. Not as long as Charbarred keeps letting me participate in SOTW anyway. :)

Gotta love Relativity by Grafton Primary. Grafton Primary sounds like a school name. Isn’t that giant bald guy who sang Beds Are Burning part of the new Aussie PM’s government?

    Is he?

  7. Kendall on November 27th, 2007 8:08 pm

Wouldn’t Jen be the authority on this one?
