Top 17 Albums of 2007 (Rustycat)
By: Rustycat | in: Music |
Here are the albums that moved me, excited me, made me miss home, made me yearn for winter, made me yearn for summer and just plain simple - rocked my year.
17. Bonnie Prince – The Letting Go
Why? Cause Will Oldham stays true to his music and even though the name changes around I can still spot him a mile away and his music is always there to sooth my day when in need of a quiet gentle soundtrack to my day.
Wai
16. Okkervil River – The Stage Names
Why? Cause they bring out a calm and frustration in me. I’ve been a fan from day one and I think these guys have yet to show us where lo-fi indie can go if you support it properly.
Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe
15. Spokane – Little Hours
Why? Cause I can rest easy at night knowing bands like this exist and are still making pure “unlabeled” music. And it’s my favorite background album that I can work to.

Minor Careers
14. The Snake The Cross The Crown – Cotton Teeth
Why? Cause when I heard Cakewalk for the first time I really believed the singer and didn’t think he was just trying to escape reality. This is an amazing album with roots to the alt. country vibe that I’ve learned to love last couple of years and kind of missed this year.

Behold The River
13. Bodies of Water – Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink
Why? Cause these guys rock. They have that unique indie pop sound that I like very similar to that of The New Pornographers and considering the couple started out playing at home for kicks they did a great job and produced an amazing album. And..Secretly Canadian knows how to pick em’.
I Guess I’ll Forget The Sound, I Guess, I Guess
12. Two Gallants – Two Gallants
Why? Cause two gallants for me are one of the promising ensembles kicking around these days, the Neil Young’s of our generation.
Despite What You’ve Been Told
11. The New Pornographers – Challengers
Why? Cause…well…ask all the other bloggers, they’ll tell you. But really, cause it’s a really good album with that indie pop groove I love.
The New Pornographers - Myriad Harbour
10. Octoberman – Run From Safety
Why? Cause he really deserves it. It might not be the number one album of the year but that’s just because it’s very raw. If you listen to Chasing Ambulances you’ll see what I mean. He has the potential and the album played a nice part of my playlist for the past few months.
Run From Safety
9. Shins – Wincing the Night
Why? Cause everybody dissed them when the album came out. And because they took their time and produced an amazing piece of art that takes a few moments to settle in and catch your attention.
A Comet Appears
8. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
Why? Cause they nailed it! I have to admit I didn’t know of Montreal that well up until we started VIRV TV and I’ve been listening to their videos all day. This album is one of the coolest albums I’ve recently heard.
Of Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse
7. Bright Eyes – Cassadaga
Why? Cause Connor rocks. I love it how he always sounds sincere and how the acoustic tracks reach out to anyone. And even though he’s become semi-famous after the last album, Cassadaga is another gem in his discography.

No One Would Riot For Less
6. Band of Horses – Cease to Begin
Why? Cause these guys know how to put an album together and even though it’s not as good as their previous release, songs like cigarettes
and wedding bands keep me going.
Cigarettes, Wedding Bands
5. Apples in Stereo – New Magnatic Wonder
Why? Cause it took me five listens to get used to this album. It has it all, that’s why.
Apples in Stereo - Sunndal Song
4. Alberta Cross – The Thief and the Heartbreaker
Why? Cause it’s just plain and simple one of the best albums of the year. The singer can move mountains with his vocals and they really put togther a knock out release.
The Thief & The Heartbreaker
3. Neil Young – Live at Massey Hall 1970
Why? Cause…do I really need to ellobarate? Just for argument cause this is Neil’s finest hour and a beautiful realease, the sound the atmosphire, it really nailed the moment.
Cowgirl In The Sand
2. Radiohead – In Rainbows
Why? Cause I’m a huge Radiohead fan and even though this album might not be what it’s all built up to be, Thom and the gang really delivered on the distribution concept and also delivered probably the best album of the year.
[Plugg Review]
Radiohead: Faust Arp
1. Malajube – Trompe L’Oeil
Why? Cause when I caught Malajube live in Berlin they rocked my world, it was one of those live shows that keeps the smile on your face for months and even though it’s in french and I have no idea what they’re saying it’s still probably the most played album on my playlist.
[Plugg Review]
La Monogamie
Motreal 40c

Why? Cause Built to Spill and Cursive didn’t release an album this year.

Great list Rusty!
Gotta agree with you on the Shins…I compeletely forgot about them even though it was one of the few albums I actually went and bought a physical copy of this year.
Radiohead at 2st place? nooo…:(
Now I have to make a spreadsheet so I can put yours and Charbarred’s list, plus any other list that appears. Then I have to crossreference it and remove all multiple listings and thus arrive at a master list of the best Disks of the year. Then I have to scrimp and save until I have enough scratch to go to the music store. Once there, with trusty list in hand, I will raid the used disk bin like a drunken pirate, looking for as many of these ones as I can find. One question however, Do you know where I can find top album lists that are genre specific, like Industrial or punk or, god forbid, metal? And it has be reputable (ha).
Rustycat, I thought this was great and enjoyed it thank you for sending it and sharing it with me..
