Things to Look Forward to in 2008
By: Kendall | in: Movies, Music, TV |Each year brings us new resolutions (most of which fall through the cracks), new opportunities, and hopes of what will be. Since it’s the beginning of the New Year, we at The Plugg, have decided to put together a list of things that we are looking forward to as the New Year unfolds. Below is what we have come up with, in no special order.

TELEVISION
End of the writers’ strike for television – As we have reported before, the writers strike has put a big old dent in our TV watching habits. How long can this thing carry over? At least Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno are rejoining the ranks.
Lost – Writers’ strike or not, J.J. Abrams and co. have managed to shoot some new episodes which will start airing on the 31st of January. This season will only offer 8 episodes instead of the planned 13, but let’s face it; we wouldn’t get any answers even if it ran for a full season. Nevertheless, with the promise of some flash-forwards and more action, we’ll be hooked as usual.

MUSIC
The New Weezer Album - Pinkerton stands as the best Weezer album in most fans’ eyes, but for some reason, whenever a new album is due out the rabidness of fandom comes to fruition, and hopes for a new masterpiece arrive. April 22nd can’t get here fast enough.
Guns N’ Roses – Chinese Democracy - We all like to start each year with a promise of world peace, happiness, an end to poverty and Chinese Democracy. Will Axl finally have the balls to release his extremely long awaited monster of an album? Probably not, but at the moment it is slated for a February release.
Dr. Dre – Dre has reported that his 2008 release of Detox will be his final album as a solo artist. He states he hopes to continue working as a producer.
Michael Jackson ??– The album title is still TBA, but if there is a hit single hiding on the album produced by Will.i.am, Rodney Jerkins, Teddy Riley and many others, it could be a decent effort. Supposedly it will be dance heavy tracks laced with tons of melodies.

POLITICS
The 2008 U.S. Presidential Election – Obviously the opinion of this could change rapidly depending on who wins their respective caucuses. From there, we can only pray that it will end up better than the past 8 years.

MOVIES
Cloverfield - (of course) Now really, who can resist this? I can’t say for certain if this will be a great movie, but I can watch this trailer over and over again! Out Jan. 18th.
Batman – The last Batman movies surprised and delighted audiences. Batman was actually a dark movie again. The end set up the sequel, and The Dark Knight, has added Heath Ledger to the mix as the Joker. If the trailer is any forecast of the movie, people might be asking, “Jack, who?”
The new Ghostbusters video Game - If you are a movie fan, at all, you’ve seen Ghostbusters. It’s an utter classic. The logo is one of the most recognized logo’s of all times, and has brought us one of the most memorable theme songs of all time. Plans for making a Ghostbuster video game have been busted for years. Finally Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis are on board and writing the script of the game. All the original characters are back to voice it. Yes, it’s a game, not a movie, but it’s supposed to be so close they are even thinking of just calling it Ghostbusters III.
Diary of the Dead - George A. Romero’s latest (no trailer yet, but here’s George talking about it). More Cloverfield-esque cinema verite, but this time with cannibalistic zombies! Out Feb. 15th.
Paranoid Park - Gus Van Sant’s new features the Burnside Bridge skate park where I have personally seen a yuppie dad come a stuffy comment or two from getting his ass kicked, and which you can virtually skate in Tony Hawk Pro Skater! Ignore the French release date; this film is out March 7th.
Trick R’ Treat - OK, so this movie doesn’t come out until October. It looks like Bryan Singer has created a winning bit of fluff here and I’m ready to go right now!

Thanks to the others that helped pull this little list together!
Great post! THX for the heads up.
Lost did not even air in the fall yet they only have 8 episodes in the can???
Having actually skated Burnside many times, both sober and otherwise, I am looking forward to Paranoid Park, FYI..the name refers to another park that got its nickname from many fisticuffs and drug deals gone bad and those nasty punk rockers drinking cheap beer. Anything with zombies and Romero will have my undivided attention as well. I have seen the Cloverfield preview in theatre’s and you can color me intrigued. I too would love to see Chinese Democracy but the question is…will it be the fat Axl or the thin Axl? Great Post!
@Steve - Lost was planned for a short series followed by another one which will end the story. I think there is only so much you can do with it until people get sick of not getting any substantial answers. As far as I understand its creators are very unhappy with what will serve as its season finale so there might be an extra episode if they manage to wrap up the WGA strike.
@Itax - Most likely it will be fat braided hair voiceless Axl - Did you see his MTV performance a few years ago? He hardly managed to sing any of his old songs…hopefully that was a one off thing because the tracks that did leak to the internet sound pretty good.
Actually, Lost has three more sixteen episode seasons to go. This because of the positive response to last year’s “no commercials” block of episodes. The idea being Lost is only on for four months a year but it’s an uninterrupted string every time. Of course, no one counted on the writer’s strike…
Lost IV should be awesome, there’s so many questions waiting to be answered and the III finale kinda left me asking for more :
maybe they’ll tie Lost and Cloverfield together. I kid I kid.
Batman, Cloverfield, and a spanking new Prez of the US. Great post, Kendall!
I said “no commercials” but I meant to say “no repeats”. I have no excuse.
