Foals - Balloons

There’s a deafening buzz about Foals in the UK. Personally I don’t see how they differ from the hoards of 80’s revivalists that have taken over the airways as of late. The guitars are great, the beat is tight, and these guys really seem to mean it. The video is probably the main draw in this case, but also serves as a reminder that if you throw enough money at promoting something you can just about convince the masses that your product is not just another clone. There’s nothing wrong with loving a certain genre, but a bit of ingenuity goes a long way…

For a better example of how to pay tribute to your idols without sounding exactly the same, have a listen to Vampire Weekend. A mix of reggae and classical music doesn’t often appear on my playlist. Throw in some interesting beat changes and actual emotion and you’ve got yourself a real winner.

I remember when they used to call this band “The Bravery” - but that was back before the Bravery’s new album in which they tried to become the Arctic Monkeys…
In all seriousness, the band is good. But my comment and your post do hint at the fact that its all been done before. Who knows, I am sure they have their fans. They aren’t revivalists if people weren’t alive or aware of the initial material.
Before they called it The Bravery, they used to call this band “The Rapture” who has been at it since 1999. Prior to that, I believe this band went by the name “Talking Heads”
Maybe this band can bring back mustache’s.
Like a cross between Romeo Void and Gang Of Four. Actually, I like both songs (and I don’t see anything special about the video) though I admit Foals are derivative while Vampire Weekend is more original.
And Kendal’s comment re Foals bringing back mustaches has convinced me to grow one even though I know the end result after months of careful tending will only be to appear as though I’ve forgotten to wash my upper lip for a year.
Yeah the mustache has been out of favor for a very long time. It didn’t come back 10 years ago with the seventies so maybe the eighties revival will present us with some Freddie Mercury look a likes.
Tom Selleck, we’re looking at you to lead the revolution!
I admit I’m pretty much a sucker for most of these 80’s revivalist bands seeing as many of the original bands from that era, The Police, Men At Work, Madness, etc. still rank among my all time favorites. That said the Foals don’t strike me as one of the better revivalists. I found these guys a while back and love that late 70s early 80s vibe, http://www.epitunes.com/Artists/The-Red-Hearts
I do like that Vampire Weekend song, will definitely search for more of there stuff.
