Whining about the Golden Globes

I bet that while everyone wants to get an Oscar and become a huge star, receiving a Golden Globes means a bit more. Yeah, there was no glitzy show, but plenty of talk of the lack thereof. More so, everyone is constantly bitching…so I thought I’d join in.

Best Drama – Atonement
I have not seen “There will be Blood”, so I’m not equipped to complain with everyone else. I have, however, enjoyed Atonement immensely, and despite not being a huge Ian McEwan fan and preferring the non-inclusion of Keira Knightly in films, it was a great treat.

Actress (Musical or Comedy) - Marion Cotillard - La Vie en Rose
I doubt anyone can hold a candle to Cotillard’s performance this year. The problem is, La Vie en Rose was not a musical. Calling it a musical because of its subject is like naming a movie a western because it takes place in California. I know they were looking for an excuse to give her the award, but they robbed Nikki Blonsky and Ellen Page in the process.

Coen Brothers

Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem - No Country for Old Men
Bardem definitely stole the show this year. Why do they split the best actor category into comedy and drama but not the supporting actor? This is where you’d often find the best performances, and John Travolta deserves a big nod for Hairspray.

Screenplay - Joel and Ethan Coen - No Country for Old Men
If I had to sit down and actually read the screenplays, I’d be very grateful for the Coens for the 5 page treat they’ve thrown my way. No Country for Old Men had great direction, cinematography and acting, but of all things the script was a bit lacking, especially when you consider other Coen brothers scripts. In a year when an Aaron Sorkin script is up for an award, I think you’re supposed to give it to Sorkin, aren’t you?

Actress – Television – Glen Close – Damages
Glen Close is great, and was tremendous in Damages. I personally would have given it to Minnie Driver or Sally Field, but hey, Glen Close is great and was tremendous in Damages.

Best Musical or Comedy – Television – Extras
Rickie Gervais is funny, really funny…for the first ten minutes. Then it’s all about how to survive the rest of the episode. Granted it’s an interesting show, but not as interesting as Pushing Daisies.

Best Actress – Comedy – Tina Fey – 30 Rock For me this was the weirdest win. Yeah, Tina Fey is funny at times and did a great Seinfeld impression, but come on, Christina Applegate is pure genius in Samatha Who.
