Hot Water Music

I skirted the edge of the 80’s in my music listening and appreciation. Most of what I had heard I didn’t really care for. I’ve grown to appreciate it a lot more over the years. Around the time Nirvana broke, I was in my full fledge musical exploration of explorations. After grunge really pulled me, I ended up reverting to punk. I’m not sure what spurred that on. Maybe it was the fact that Green Day hit so big, and so hard, and I was so proud that punk band could still bring a name on for themselves in the post punk world. From then on it was Bad Religion, NOFX, early Blink 182, Sex Pistols, H2O, Anti-flag, Dropkick Murphys etc… you get my point.

Over time my tastes have veered from punk, to hip-hop and dance, all the way to jazz. Lately I’ve been struggling to find an act that lights a fire under my ass like what used to happen 10 years ago. I got a little excited about the 80’s retro thing, and if you read my previous works, I think the point was made abundantly clear. I’m beginning to move on, but I just can’t find something that just makes me stop and listen.

On my way to work, I heard an advertisement for a Hot Water Music show. What was this? I had not heard this! I am a music snob, and always know about music first. I started to think my age is beginning to catch up to me. It seems to happen to most guys around their 30’s. So, I decided to do some research. Low and behold, this new music took me back to the punk I used to idolize. Filled with anathematic choruses, husky oh oh oh’s, and gnarly guitars that feed off the punk progressions, but with grunge fills. The bass lines chime in leading the way, and the drums lack reverb, and pound out a tight punk rock trench through the songs. Epitaph Records seems to remember their roots. This is not emo. This is not post-hardcore. This is punk. I’m sorry that I’m late to the game on this one, but if you missed it too, here’s some samples.

They go all the way back to 1997. It’s interesting that they haven’t managed to ride the Green Day/Blink 182 wave. Saying that, their music is more straight forward and less teenage pop so I guess it’s understandable.

Hot Water Music is awesome! I loved them when I first heard them on the old punk-o-rama CDs.

So you’re falling behind the curve, are you Kendall? Don’t worry, there’s always room at the old folks home. You’ll love polka night!
