Song of the Week - January 25

Every other week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter.

The Moldy Peaches - Downloading Porn with Davo
It’s been a hell of a busy week. Busy and annoying. Which naturally puts me in a bad mood. The highlight of the week was watching Juno. It’s a wonderful film and I was glad that The Moldy Peaches got some recognition out of it. But I’m in an antisocial mood and this is probably the most antisocial song I can think of. Sounds like something I’d write in the basement with a friend when I was 12 years old.

D Thompson
Blockhead - The Art of Walking
The Art Of Walking is from the 2005 album “Downtown Science”. Blending old-timey gospel and 70’s disco funk with hip hop wasn’t enough for alt producer-slash-musician Blockhead. By all means, let’s sweeten the pot with a screechy violin solo that sounds like its from an eighth grade recital and sprinkle in clips from an old stereo demonstration record. I’m flyin’!

Alibastard
Meshell Ndegeocello - A Different Girl Every Night
Dykie, bassist crush Meshell Ndegeocello delivers searing, strange cosmic-political Future-pop on her new album The World has made me the Man of My Dreams. This song just sings its way into my memory, the hook playing nonstop inside my brainskull. And that seventies, horror film Synth — what is that?
I’m in love.

Craig Chesler - Nowhere Too Far
I first heard this song by Craig Chesler about 4 years ago. It’s a really fun song to listen to. I don’t think he’s released a solo album since 2004 but he still tours New York. If you dig him you might want to check out his band Tom Clark and the High Action Boys.

ID Guinness - Down To This
Every time I have to choose a song of the week, I really try to stay loyal to what I’ve been actually listening to all week. ID Guinness came to my attention through Ryan. It doesn’t immediately catch you at first listen, but the music is so rewarding after the second listen that’s it worth it. Thanks Ryan!

Sondre Lerche and Lillian Samdal - Modern Nature
I never saw Dan in Real Life, but I want to. In the meantime I did get to hear the soundtrack which is nearly all done by Sondre Lerche. This track is an interesting duet. It has that very Norwegian pop sound with peppy simplicity. The chemistry is dead on, and it gives the feeling of one happy giant hook.

Mozzer Mozzer
Rodrigo y Gabriela - “Diablo Rojo”
Their story is unique: A pair of Mexican metalheads relocate to Ireland only to transform themselves into one of the hottest acoustic guitar acts in recent memory. Rodrigo y Gabriela have steadily built an international following, and with “Diablo Rojo” it’s easy to see why. Rod takes the lead with his ultra-fast melodies while Gab astounds all with her rhythm and percussive skills. The result is a jaw-dropping, Latin-infused, acoustical escapade.

So, what’s your song of the week?

Very interesting selections this week. Meshell Ndegeocello sounding like NIN, Lee choosing a song that Mr. Thompson would normally choose, D Thompson choosing a song that Lee would choose…2 metal heads playing flamenco, 2 soundtrack related songs and Rusty choosing a song that’s actually out in the shops already. My bad mood is starting to wear off…

A big thanks goes out to my darling wife for informing me of of Rod y Gab. I pretty much spent the week watching their videos and listening to their album. :)

Glad you like Id! He’s amazing. Overall, a great group of songs.

I didn’t the discover the Moldy Peaches until last summer when I stumbled on Kimya Dawson’s “Remember That I Love You.” which I fell in love with and haven’t stopped listening to since.

I’m not a huge fan of Blockheads instrumental albums but his work with Aesop Rock is classic material.

I must admit that I haven’t really followed Meshell Ndegeocello since the ’90s but I really like this one. Great album title.

Rusty, you were absolutely right about ID Guinness. I had to listen to it twice to really appreciate it.

I always love it when a single artist does and soundtrack themselves. I might have to check this one out.

I think I saw this Letterman show when it first aired and was truly amazed. I see I wasn’t the only one.

That Moldy Peaches song is jammin’! Owning the Killer Pussy single “Teenage Enema Nurses In Bondage” I thought I’d heard the most antisocial songs on the planet, I was wrong.

Lee, I’m not a huge fan of Blockhead myself, but something about his work keeps dragging me back. And then this piece just stuck, I think it was the violin solo, or the left-right stereo freak out in the middle.

Meshelle Ndegeocello is the prototype ‘out on the edge’ artist, usually a little too out there for me, in the past anyway, but this track is really great. Does that mean she’s slowing down, or I’m catching up?

I didn’t like the ID Guiness track but then I thought, “Any band with ‘Guiness’ in their name deserves another listen, and besides, Rusty says to give it another listen and he likes the movie Rust Never Sleeps so his taste can’t be all bad.” So, having thought that, I gave it another listen.

Is that what Norwegian pop music sounds like? Norway must be the happiest place on Earth! No, that’s Disneyland… Now I’m confused. Norway must be Disneyland!

    Mozzer. Wow.

    It’s a small world after all, D!

Great stuff guys. I really like Ndegeocello and loved Sondre Lerche.

As for the The Moldy Peaches, Dang that almost sounds like a TV show intro. Gather round kiddos, it time for ‘Downloading Porn With Davo’! yaaay!
