Best Facial Hair in Modern Rock

By: Kendall | in: General, Music |

Every decade or so we see a new crop of musicians sporting some kind of trendy facial hair.  After many pictures, great thought, and a lot of brain picking, this is what we at The Plugg have decided to be the best Facial Hair in Modern Rock, complete with lovely descriptions of beard types.

The Full Beard - downward flowing beard with either styled or integrated moustache

Rob Zombie

Dave Grohl

Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio)

Band of Horses

William Oldham

Doug Marsch (Built To Spill)

Sideburns - a full beard with a shaved chin

Lemmy from Motorhead was best known for his Chops (well, after a really gnarly mole), he rocked hard, partied hard, and sure as hell didn’t fool around when it came to bad ass chops.  Neil Young was another leader in this Department, and Elvis was jumpsuiting his way in with them.

The Mustache - A moustache (or mustache) is facial hair grown on the upper lip. Often the term implies that the wearer grows only the upper lip hair and chooses to shave the hair on his chin and cheeks, whereas growth of all facial hair would constitute a beard.

The Late 70’s and Early 80’s brought on some Great Mustaches.  Frank Zappa was a hero for the Mustacheod.  We can’t leave out Hall and Oats, either.  And it’s worth a mention again, Frank Beard of ZZ Top.

Jess Hughes (Eagles of Deathmetal)

Ben Pringle (The Rentals)

image011.jpg

Dave 1 (Chromeo)

image012.jpg

Goatee - A tuft of hair grown on the chin, sometimes resembling a billy goat’s.

image013.jpg

Kid Rock

image014.jpg

James Hettfield (Metallica)

image015.jpg

Soul Patch - The soul patch is a small patch of facial hair just below the lower lip and above the chin. It came to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s.

Jack White

image016.jpg

Trent Reznor (sure it’s gone now, but WOW!)

Al Jourgensen (Ministry)

And for everyone’s reference, here is a lovely chart to help you discern what type of beard you may like to grow to help you rock harder.

You hit my man from Built to Spill and BOH’s Ben Bridwell. Those are the best ones on tour. When was the last time you saw the guys from Archie Bronson Outfit? They have spent the last 14 months doing nothing else but growing facial hair. Seriously.

  2. Kendall on February 6th, 2008 7:27 pm

Ryan, send us your gnarly facial hair pictures!

  12. Yair Y on February 6th, 2008 11:38 pm

    great post.

  13. kevin on February 6th, 2008 11:40 pm

    wayne static.

  14. Tibi Puiu on February 7th, 2008 1:13 am

Jesse Hughes has definitely got the best facial hair, our of the whole lot :D. A bit disappointed that you forgot to add ZZ-Top, but you made up for it. Great post Kendall ;)

  15. Mandi on February 7th, 2008 1:17 am

But where is Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello?? His mustache owns all other mustaches.

  16. Robbie Bourne on February 7th, 2008 1:20 am

ZZ Top is a must. And I would say check out He is Legend. Don’t forget Rivers Cuomo’s beard days. And even Jack Johnson recently had a pretty good one going.

  17. Ian Clement on February 7th, 2008 1:44 am

You missed out Neil Fallon From Clutch! Crime!

  18. Judy on February 7th, 2008 2:09 am

    Where are ZZtop!
    :)

  19. brijj on February 7th, 2008 2:13 am

gotta include - chris cornell…one of the best in the scene, and for a long time now…and still going strong/better.

  20. Charbarred on February 7th, 2008 2:16 am

This is about MODERN rock…ZZ Top is CLASSIC rock I guess…

  21. antrozdak on February 7th, 2008 2:43 am

marco hietala should be in this list too..

  22. Unski on February 7th, 2008 2:50 am

You forgot Freddy Mercury’s moustache! :)

  23. Jack on February 7th, 2008 3:22 am

    No Dimebag?

  24. DThompson on February 7th, 2008 4:19 am

I have to say that the non-inclusion of Ted Nugent’s soul patch was a great disappointment. However, in fairness to Kendall, I must admit that I’m just a worthless old fart, my taste in rock & roll facial hair only fit to be sniggered at by younger more vital men. Sigh…

  25. Rusty on February 7th, 2008 5:09 am

    Here’s ZZ top :-)
    zztop

  26. Rich on February 7th, 2008 5:22 am

Another vote for Neil Fallon here - first guy I thought of!

  27. Kendall on February 7th, 2008 5:45 am

You know I had Neil Fallon, and took him off when the Full Beard section started to get a bit too large. My Apologies to Clutch Fans! As for ZZ top, Ted Nugent, etc., I was trying to steer clear of 80’s artists the best that I could, but I do believe that I DID mention ZZ Top! But yeah, they have the best beards.

  28. Jon on February 7th, 2008 6:57 am

I’m going to throw a vote in for Neil Fallon as well. And I’d also like to throw one in for Ironlung from Scissorfight. That guy’s beard is tremendous.

  29. Jon on February 7th, 2008 7:11 am

Sorry to double comment, but what about Valient Thorr? There are no less than FOUR solid contenders in that band.

  30. Jack on February 7th, 2008 8:03 am

These photos nearly made me sick. Pubic hair should stay down below, in the underpants and out of sight.

  31. Steve on February 7th, 2008 2:43 pm

I think Neil Fallon from Clutch should’ve been on the list.

  32. Itax on February 7th, 2008 4:53 pm

    What about Avril Lavigne?

  33. Mr Surbade on February 8th, 2008 3:32 pm

    Clutch !!

  34. mozzer on February 8th, 2008 8:13 pm

Well, you included my only pick–the iron & wine guy. great list!

  35. den on February 8th, 2008 9:29 pm

    where’s GARCIA?????

  36. JDG on February 14th, 2008 1:09 am

    Where is Frank Zappa?

  37. bluebeard on February 21st, 2008 2:25 am

ok… if dave grohl is in w/ his beard.. then eddie spaghetti from supersuckers should be in. Scott Ian is still rocking last i heard… thats a goatee from hell…. just like static x. If you wanna talk beards… that drummer from Lamb Of God, even better than zz top, lol.

  38. Thatguy on February 21st, 2008 4:50 am

    two words: Zakk Wylde

  39. JP on February 21st, 2008 7:55 am

Wayne Static. DEFINITELY. Zakk Wylde. ABSOLUTELY. Jonathan Davis. How about him? Or maybe Sully from Godsmack? Or the lead singer of Mudvayne/HellYeah? They all have killer facial hair. And they’re much more well known than some of the bands that were posted.

  40. Chris on February 21st, 2008 9:04 am

what about the lead singer of les savy fav, can’t remember his name atm, but he has some serious beard going on

  41. Jeremy on February 21st, 2008 9:44 am

Where is Shavo Odadjian and his braided beard??? the reason ZZ Top wasnt on here is because this is for “Modern” Rock, ZZ Top is Classic Rock

  42. ilovebeards on February 21st, 2008 12:13 pm

    beards are so hot. wow.

  43. JET on February 21st, 2008 1:03 pm

As a hideously Americocentric as this list is, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Biffy Clyro weren’t on it.

  44. drew on February 21st, 2008 2:28 pm

This is leaving out one of the best: Devendra Banhart.

  45. 123456789 on February 21st, 2008 4:50 pm

How could you NOT include FRED MASCHERINO from The Color Fred/Taking Back Sunday(former member)!!!!!! HIS BEARD IS AWESOME!!! http://www.tbsunion.com/coppermine/cpg135/displayimage.php?pid=3248&fullsize=1
    there he is

  46. gawd on February 21st, 2008 7:33 pm

I know he’s metal, but what about kerry king from slayer?

  47. Scott on February 22nd, 2008 2:41 am

No way this is a legit list.
    No ZZ Top.
Even their drummer with “No beard” last name is Beard!

  48. Kikkoman on February 23rd, 2008 7:04 pm

WTF? You totally fucking missed Cedric from TMV and you include mother fucking Dave Grohl? Way to fuck up Plugg, way to fuck up…

  49. coolierthanthou on February 23rd, 2008 8:22 pm

Adam Dutkiewicz from Killswitch Engage rules the chops competition.

  50. ali on February 25th, 2008 5:30 pm

you forgot the infamous Serj Tankian’s beard!

  51. Proph on March 6th, 2008 5:48 am

    WHERES THE BIFFY CLYRO?!

  52. Alex on March 6th, 2008 5:59 pm

No mere mortal can match with Franz Nicolay in the Mustache Department. Look upon his HREF=”http://www.bbgunbilly.com/uploads/154Franz%20Nicolay-hold%20steadylo.jpg”>works , ye mighty, and despair.
