Song of the Week - February 8

Bon Iver

Every other week each of our writers shares the song that made his/her week just a little bit brighter.

Kendall
Bon Iver – Skinny Love
Bon Iver has spent time in several bands. Eventually, after they split, he locked himself in a cabin in northern Wisonsin. He released an album, became a huge hit at CMJ, and was signed. He’s about to release a new album called Emma, Forever ago. Skinny love is the track, and will leave you feeling the draft coming through the cabin windows, picturing fire crackling and wiping the mud off your boots… in falsetto.

Clinic - If You Could Read Your Mind
I just love the Man From U.N.C.L.E. meets Haight-Asbury intro of this song. It’s like the soundtrack to James Bond changing in his suit for a tie-dye T-shirt and a tambourine. It’s the kind of song Simon Templar would rip off some rich criminal to, if he was on acid. It even has one of those patented Sixties ‘blow-your-mind’ titles. If I could read my mind I’d hear it say this song is caperdelic!

Malcolm Middleton - Blue Plastic Bags
I love how Malcolm Middleton manages to disguise his bleak views as catchy pop tunes. This song simply nails modern living. The sing along bit in the end seals the deal for me.

- Girls just Wanna Have Fun
Everything led to this song being my song of the week. First the Death Cab For Cutie post I posted a few days back and then reading Ekko’s awesome cover post on The Berkeley Place blog. Great cover.

Mozzer Mozzer
Cat Power - Lost Someone
I’ve basically been listen to Cat Power’s Jukebox all week, non-stop, and in its entirety. James Brown’s “Lost Someone” is just one of the many exquisite covers off the album.

So, what’s your song of the week?

I’ll have to go with Mozzer’s pick this week. I guess I’ve got a soft spot for Chan Marshall (blushing).

Mozzer’s pick? WHAT pick? There’s nothing under Mozzer’s tantalizing write up but an empty space. Are you guys trying to mess with my mind or something?

Cat Power is only visible to the cool kids like Tibi Puiu. Hey, I’m kidding!
