The Plugg Inbox- Mellow and Intense

By: Rustycat | in: Music |

We get hundreds of press releases on a daily basis to our inbox. We love the music and the press agents and labels are sending us truly awesome stuff but it’s really hard writing about each and every cool band. So I wanted to share some quick notes with you guys while I listen to music.
I have to add that it’s quite refreshing to see that the promoters out there are doing a great job sending us music that really connects with what The Plugg is all about. Thanks!

New Pronographers – Interface Podcast!

[Download Podcast]

“Rolling seven deep, Canada’s New Pornographers took to our (Spinner.com) New York studio to unload four tunes from their latest album,’Challengers.’ A.C. Newman and crew — not to mention Neko Case — offered up power-pop duets of epic proportion.”

Rusty says:
Need I say more? Awesome stuff!

Coco B’s - Modern Lover

[Download]

“In between the quiet suburban landscapes of track homes, mini-malls and the mean streets of Southern Californai, you’ll find the CoCo B’s. The CoCo B’s put out a self released EP last year and most recently a split CD with neighbors Eskimohunter. Coco B’s self-titled debut album is a collection of catchy fuzz-pop anthems.”

Rusty says:
It says it all ‘Fuzzy pop hits’, it’s always good fun.

folklore.jpg

Folklore - H.W. Beaverman

[Download]

“Folklore, a new project from Elf Power guitarist Jimmy Hughes with quite an intriguing premise. On its concept LP The Ghost of H.W. Beaverman– which features guest appearances from pretty much half the population of Athens, Georgia– the combo “takes ghost stories based in the mountains of upstate New York and dissects them into the myths and rumors from which they are based” – [Pitchfork Media]

Rusty says:
A bit too something in my opinion, but it’s got a great flow to it.

Tulsa – Rafter

[Download]

“Carter Tanton examines loss and reunion with refreshing bounce. But his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world - set in the same alpine reverb where Jim James of My Morning Jacket lives - while the iridescent bloom of the guitars is a quality flashback to the clean-twang and country-fuzz blend of the 1968-69 Byrds.” - David Fricke, [Rolling Stone “Fricke’s Picks”]

Rusty says:
I love it; give it a second spin to make sure it sinks in properly.

HIJK - Hey Sleepy Smile

[Download]

“Following up the release of the The Pen And The Letter, HIJK has completed a music video to compliment its new single “Paper Boat.” In the video HIJK matches its exuberant power rock to the noir-like story of two masked robbers raiding the home of a tech-hungry evil wizard.”

Rusty says:
Take a few seconds to mellow in to this track, it’s worth it.

maritime.jpg

Maritime – Boy From School

[Download]

“Writing about “Guns of Navarone” in his review of Maritime’s Heresy and the Hotel Choir last year, Pitchfork’s Brian Howe said, “[It] might take its title from the WWII novel and film of the same name, but Davey von Bohlen’s no square-jawed Gregory Peck– even his mature singing style has an aura of shyness– and given the song’s vaguely ska chorus, it’s more likely a nod to the Skatalites song of the same name.”

Rusty says:
Very refreshing sound; definitely worth a good listen.

The Buddyrevelles – I Dream of Rodney

[Download]

“Cleaning up the mud from under their ears after completing the music video for “The Foreigner,” The Buddyrevelles return with yet another wildly creative music video for the Stereogum approved track “I Dream of Rodney.”

Rusty says:
I almost stopped this track half way but then it suddenly picks up and the guitars take over. Seems like the theme of this post today.

miwa.jpg

Miwa Gemini – Travelling Man

[Download]

“This Is How I Found You, the new album by New York chanteuse Miwa Gemini, takes on the darkest affairs of the heart with a saccharine smile and haunting vocals you won’t hear anywhere else. A multi-instrumentalist, Miwa incorporates guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano to drive powerful songs of loss and redemption: Think Nina Simone meets Sparklehorse meets Cat Power, and you’re getting close.”

Rusty says:

Ooh sounds very cool, I didn’t know about Miwa before, I’m gonna dig in to this album this week.

Bon Ivor – Skinny Love

[Download]

“The wait for the release date is nearly over! Bon Iver’s “For Emma, Forever Ago” is now available for pre-order at the SC Distribution site. Not only will the recipient get the best record they’ve heard in a coon’s age, they’ll also receive a beautiful off-set color poster that features a pastel-colored bear. Order it here.”

Rusty says:
Big fan of Jagjaguwar Records. Really looking forward to this one.

Against Me! - The Ocean (Live)

From the band - “We just posted a YouTube clip of our acoustic performance of “Ocean” at our special Thanksgiving Day benefit show in Chicago this past November…hope you enjoy it!”
Rusty says:
Not bad, not bad at all!
