Album Review: Run Dan Run ‘Basic Mechanics’

I sure wish I could write about every great band that sends me an album. When I got Dan Run Dan’s Basic Mechanics for review a month ago I did a quick Google search and realized they are already getting some blog love. I figured I’d leave it alone and concentrate my efforts on those more in need of exposure. It turns out good music can’t be swept under the rug and it’s time to give these guys the appreciation they deserve.

At first listen South Carolina’s Run Dan Run’s music is very reminiscent of Say Hi (formerly Say Hi to Your Mom). It’s great company to be in, but a closer listen strips away the parallels and reveals something a bit more intricate. The initial thing you notice is their ability to write songs. It’s not about complex compositions, but rather catchy tunes that you may actually find their way to your local radio station. Saying that, there is great variety in Basic Mechanics which will keep you guessing as each track progresses.

The album seems to be a collection of songs recorded through time with no set production in mind. The result is actually positive. The instrumentation is tailored specifically for each song leaving you with a multifaceted experience. As a whole the album enjoys a lot of synths and pads, but guitars, strings and backing vocals contribute equally when needed. Add to that a very interesting (and erratic at times) use of drum patterns and percussions and you’ve got yourself a very enjoyable listen.

Highlights include the epic “Multi Colored Lights”, “Your Name Escapes Me” and “The Turnover”. Basic Mechanics is an intelligent yet very accessible adventure. You can get the album directly from the band at CDBaby, and maybe even help me figure out why the 11th track on the album is the intro to the 4th one. Highly recommended.
