25 Years - Where’d it Go? A rant…
By: Kendall | in: Design, Music, TV, Technology |
So last night the MTV VMA’s hit the fine old age of 25 years. 25 years of a lot of very cool moments, and some silly ones too. I will say that normally at that age, there is a lot of reason to celebrate, that’s a long life for a lot of things. Now, before I even get started on this, WHO IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY IS RUSSEL BRAND, AND WHY WAS HE HOSTING? OK, back to where I was going. I turned on the TV anxiously awaiting a great evening (shut up, I know what you are going to say). I figured hey, with all the performances maybe we could pay some homage to the great success of the past. Maybe a highlight reel, may Michael Jackson could to a duet with Chris Brown or someone else who copies him, or hell, maybe Madonna could do “Like a Virgin” or something like that. In the current world of MTV, the truth is I was horribly, HORRIBLY wrong. They did make mention that it’s been 25 years. That’s about as far as it went. Oh wait! I’m a liar. Katy Perry (I Kissed A Girl) was seen on the way to a commercial break, wearing a pin up girl swim suit out of the 40’s, that had a strap that was a pealable banana (if that didn’t make sense, it was sparkly and yellow, and she pealed the banana…get it?). She was singing “LIKE A VIRGIN” while some DJ played a terrible track and Travis Barker played drums. They didn’t even have the decency to show the whole song… AND MTV somehow had the courage to call that a performance. Britney Spears copped some awards, and everyone is calling it a comeback. Yeah, well, they also said she was opening the awards, but that didn’t mean she was singing. All she did was say welcome to awards! Ugh. They suckered millions of people with that one. She didn’t perform at all. This was no comeback. This was people feeling sorry. Hey, gas hit over $4.00 and then went down to $3.50, and everyone is SOOO thankful that gas is ONLY $3.50. It’s still no good, and it’s a false sense of well being. So BOOooo! to Britney AND to MTV on a $3.50 a gallon rip off. Apparently you need to be a member of a very exclusive club to be nominated for a VMA. Take a look at this: BEST MALE VIDEO Chris Brown, “With You” (Winner) Flo Rida, “Low” Lil Wayne, “Lollipop” T.I., “No Matter What” Usher, “Love in this Club” Is there not good male rock artists out there? Apparently none that are video worthy, right MTV? Well, It should be noted that Pink, was the most interesting performance of the night. I’m glad she switched over to Rock. I’m glad she has some attitude. This is almost Joan Jett Worthy. Watch the video below.
Other than that, we witnessed Rihanna rip off “Thriller”, the Banana Swimsuit thing, Lil Wayne make me further scratch my head (though if I’m ever famous I want T Pain to follow me around in that get up accented the last 2 words of all my sentences too), and a series of other useless garbage. This should have really been a celebration of all that was right, but instead MTV turned this into an opportunity to gloat in it’s own out of touch world. If MTV has ever dropped the ball on what could have been a cool thing. THIS WAS IT.
Oh yeah…and When Slash announced Linking Park winning best Rock Video he started laughing. That made me giggle in itself.

That sounds horrible. It was a choice between staying in and watching it tonight or going out to see the new Guy Ritchie film.
I’m glad I went out.
I thought that network went off the air a couple of years ago. Will wonders never cease! It’s a celebration of its own irrelevance.
The Twenty-Fifth Anniversary, eh? So that makes it, what? TWENTY YEARS since that network has been worth a fart in a stiff breeze?
Last night I watched an absolutely wretched early 80’s film called “Treasure of the Yankee Zephyr”, just terrible, awful, pathetic. Better than the last fifteen years of MTV combined.
Here’s ten minutes of it, you can thank me later.

Please, do we have to have this yearly turkey shoot of MTV and their “how the fuck would we know anything about videos anymore?” Awards? I’m running out of wittily nasty things to say.
My friends were complaining how there were too many breaks for VMAs last night while they were trying to watch commercials. I told them they could TiVo that shit these days so they can watch ‘Viva Viagra’ in peace.
People don’t listen.
Damn, now all I’m seeing on the right hand side is ads for Chris Brown ringtones
Once again MTV trots out its tired old whore of an awards show and pretends someone is interested in fucking it.
It could have been such a cool thing…
wow, now all I’m seeing on the right hand side is ads for Chris Brown ringtones
rofl such ignorance for Russell brand, if your
country think an old codger (McCain) is a maverick
you’re going to have a ball with Russell
Give him the right people an he can light shit up
I glad Russel Brand is getting jobs in America. Maybe now we’ll see less of him here in the UK.
Anon, for the record, he is no maverick, and won’t be getting my vote.
Wow, 25 years eh? Where are the good old days???
I agree Kendall, I don’t know who this Russel Brand is, but I’m not voting for him either!
