Classic Albums: Shudder To Think – Pony Express
By: Charbarred | in: Music |Shudder to Think formed in 1986 and released a few really interesting records for their label, Dischord, throughout the early nineties. Often sharing the bill with label mates Fugazi, the band was often related to the hardcore scene (which was later marketed as ‘Emo’ to millions of depressed teenagers)…1994 saw their first major label album called ‘Pony Express Record’.
‘Pony Express Record’ is a genre defying monster of an album. By this stage, singer Craig Wedren and co, have managed to bring their twisted songwriting to a whole new level. This is not music for the faint hearted, it is complicated and heavy at times, but manages to reach the most forgotten corners of the heart. Wedren’s often operatic singing can be found whispering and bellowing in a distance of a mere second, while the band soars through the warped melodies with energy to match.
Notable songs include ‘So Into You’, ‘No RM. 9, Kentucky’ and ‘X-French Tee Shirt’, but it’s hard to recommend a single song from this album, it really should be listened to as a whole.

Hi, nice site!
Thanks Jason
This album is the most challenging and repeatedly rewarding album in my collection of over 3000 CDs, mostly dating from the nineties on. Of all the records I own, this and 50,000 BC get the most repeats due to their timeless surprises, lyrically surrealist funk, Melvins-style mind-numbing drones, angular fuck-you-prog chops, alternate grunge and spector-pop tones and suprasensory mind-love.
Apart from the Wired All Wrong CD, this may be the best $10 investment I ever made.
Very true Tom. Thanks for the Wired All Wrong recommendation. Feel free to send us more info via email.
