[Alternative Love Songs 2008]

It seems that on our third year we have ourselves a bona fide tradition. So here it is, a bunch of great songs about love that won’t make you cringe…

Kendall
Lykke Li
– Little Bit
This song is sweet, exotic, and not too poppy.  This is one of the few love songs that doesn’t beat you over the head with mush and leaves you enjoying the song as a whole.

Lee H Lee H
Pigeon John - She Cooks Me Oatmeal
In this song Pigeon John confesses his love for his woman and her her amazing culinary abilities.

Ryan Ryan
Camera Obscura - Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken
I selected Camera Obscura’s great, “Lloyd, I’m ready to be Heartbroken” for it’s fun, upbeat twee sound and the overall tone of the song. The persona of the song wants to be in love but expects the worst to happen and still surrenders herself to the pain. This is a great Valentine’s Day selection for those of us who didn’t fall madly, deeply in love with the person we first dated and things ended up happily ever after.

D Thompson
The Real Tuesday Weld - (Still) Terminally Ambivalent Over You
Stuck with the same ol’ boring girlfriend who hasn’t taken your hints about “moving on”? Try playing her this song by (The Real) Tuesday Weld. Explain your emphasis on the word “terminally”.

Nick Cave - Into My Arms

Leave it to Mr. Cave to bargain with God about love. In one his most touching tunes, Cave explains to the big guy why his girl is pure perfection.

Songs Ohia - Love Leaves Its Abusers
“though leaving is a curious way, for you to love me” although this song is quite bitter it’s one of my favortie alternative love songs.

Kendall
Hello Goodbye
– Here in Your Arms
This is an almost over the top pop song in more ways than one.  It’s autotuned, it’s cliché’, and totally awesome for a love song… if you are a super pop emo kid who is not moping about a broken heart, and celebrating the in-between break-up period.

Lady Dottie & The Diamonds
- Have Love, Will Travel
Traveling to the other side of the music spectrum, we touch down in San Diego, CA to partake of the blues, funk and soul sound of Lady Dottie & the Diamonds - a group that has been entertaining there for years and years - but has only recently been getting the love they so richly deserve. The song I chose to play for you today from Lady Dottie is, “Have Love, Will Travel” - it’s a song about confidence and strength. It’s perfect for anyone who finds themselves ready to be in love - but maybe hasn’t met their match.

Lee H Lee H
Shelby Lynne - Pretend
If you think Shelby Lynne is pitiful or pathetic for singing the words “pretend you love me” then you’ve obviously never been in love.

D Thompson
Magnetic Fields - I Don’t Really Love You Anymore
Has your girl gone and got herself a new guy? Anxious to convince yourself how well you’re taking it? The Magnetic Fields has your solution!

Charbarred
Say Hi to Your Mom
- Yeah, I’m in Love with an Android
Hooray for diversity! Somehow this is a very moving song…

Built to Spill - The Weather
When a song has an intense moment in the middle and the singer shouts “And as long as it’s talking with you, Talk of the weather will do” you know you’re in for a good time.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

No mention of the fact that the Camera Obscura track is an homage to Lloyd Cole & the Commotions’ “Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken”? That’s about as alternative as a love song can get.

I’d never heard that Nick Cave song before- it’s beautiful. I was actually looking for songs that might tell my boyfriend how I feel about him, and this one is just perfect except that I’m the one who believes in an interventionist God, and he’s the one who doesn’t! :)
Thanks for helping me find this song. :)
