I selected Camera Obscura’s great, “Lloyd, I’m ready to be Heartbroken” for it’s fun, upbeat twee sound and the overall tone of the song. The persona of the song wants to be in love but expects the worst to happen and still surrenders herself to the pain. This is a great Valentine’s Day selection for those of us who didn’t fall madly, deeply in love with the person we first dated and things ended up happily ever after.

This is an almost over the top pop song in more ways than one. It’s autotuned, it’s cliché’, and totally awesome for a love song… if you are a super pop emo kid who is not moping about a broken heart, and celebrating the in-between break-up period.

No mention of the fact that the Camera Obscura track is an homage to Lloyd Cole & the Commotions’ “Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken”? That’s about as alternative as a love song can get.

I’d never heard that Nick Cave song before- it’s beautiful. I was actually looking for songs that might tell my boyfriend how I feel about him, and this one is just perfect except that I’m the one who believes in an interventionist God, and he’s the one who doesn’t!
