Annie Leibovitz: A Rock N’ Roll Photographer

I’m a big fan of music photography. I love buying these hundred dollar coffee table books and looking through some of music’s best moments. One of my favorite photographers is Annie Leibovitz.
Annie missed out on the sixties, with Woodstock and the entire hippie scene but she did manage to capture some of the more “pop” entertainment moments in for the seventies up until today.

Annie launched her career in 1970 at what was then a small up and coming rock n’ roll magazine named Rolling Stone. In 1973 she was named chief photographer of the magazine. Leibovitz worked through the 70’s and the begining of the 80’s at Rolling Stone with some of rocks leading artists such as Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Bob Marley and even toured with the Rolling Stones. In 1981 she was given an assignment to shoot (photos) of John Lennon and Yoko Ono together. She wanted to shoot the couple naked, Lennon agreed immediately but Yoko was a bit reluctant so she left her clothes on. According to Rolling Stone magazine Annie took one Polaroid of the couple and they all decided it was the shot. A few hours later that day, Lennon was shot and killed in front of his apartment.

In 1983 Annie started shooting covers for the entertainment magazine Vanity Fair. Here’s a special project she did recentely in 1995 which consisted of 10 three page cover foldouts. Here’s one of them: APRIL 1997: “THE NEXT WAVE” Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Claire Danes, Renée Zellweger, Minnie Driver, Alison Elliott, Jada Pinkett, Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron, and Fairuza Balk.

Though her work is often stylized due to the subjects she chooses, I think Leibovitz is one of the world’s best portrait photographers. She manages to grasp an inner truth in an outer image almost every time.
