Attack of the Killer Directors
By: Rustycat | in: Movies |Well it’s that time of the year again, when all the famous directors peddle their recent works in time for the Oscars (Feb. 25th) and The Golden Globe awards. These are usually the best two months of cinema all year round. The studios reserve the cream of the crop for this period, in hope they will snag another statuette.
You’ll be hearing a lot more over the net about these movies, and I just want to give a quick heads up on things to come:
I’ll kick it off with a movie that’s already out, “Babel“, a promising picture from Alejandro González Iñárritu, the director who brought us “21 Grams”. It’s a Drama/Thriller starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.
Following his mediocre, “Kingdom Of Heaven”, Ridley Scott is at it again with a drama starring Russell Crowe called “A Good Year“. Seems pretty harmless: a stock broker who inherits money and goes to live on a farm, meets a girl…yada yada. Truth is, Tony Scott, his brother, has been making better films for years now. His new film “Deja-Vu” starring Denzel Washington is out now. A must see.
Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez will be back with a split movie named “Grindhouse“. The film consists of Tarantino’s “Death Proof” and Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror“. Need I say more?!
Alfonso Cuaron, the director who brought us movies like “Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban”, “Great Expectations” and “Y Tu Mamá También” is getting rave reviews for his new movie “Children of Men” starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine.
The highly anticipated new movie from Darren Aronofsky who brought us his vision and joy with “A Requiem for a Dream” brings us a new movie set in the past, present and far future, “The Fountain” starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. It’s an eternal love story.
Hugh Jackman is a busy man this year with two more great films. The first is “Scoop“, the new Woody Allen film starring Hugh aside Scarlet Johansson and Woody himself. The second is the new film by Christopher Nolan (Batman Returns, Memento), “The Prestige“, one of several magician films planned for this year.
Actors turned directors are also dominating the cinema experience this year. Robert De Niro, presents “The Good Shepperd”, starring himself aside Matt Damon, Joe Pesci (where’d he disappear to?) and Angelina Jolie. Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” and Clint Eastwood’s “Flags Of Our Fathers” are also on offer, as well as Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky Balboa”.
The director of “Run Lola Run”, Tom Tykwer, has a picture about a guy who can smell you from a mile away, and simply wants to create the perfect perfume, no matter what. “Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer“, looks quite promising.
The political drama “All the King’s Men” is out as well. It’s directed by writer Steve Zaillian (Gangs of New York, The Interpreter) starring Jude Law, Sean Penn, Kate Winslet, Anthony Hopkins, Mark Raffalo and many more.
Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball, Stay) takes a shot at comedy with a touch of fantasy - “Stranger Than Fiction” stars Will Ferell.
Many of the big directors have already released their movies earlier, like Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center” and Brian De Palma’s “The Black Dahlia” but if there is any shred of justice left in the world, Scorcese’s “The Departed” will win all the Oscars.
