Bargain Basement Gold: Keren Ann

Oftentimes, a good album is released with little fanfare and languishes on virtual CD racks of the Internet. Lack of demand, in turn, depresses the retail price in the marketplace. Here is one example of an unjustly overlooked gem which can now be had on the cheap.
This past May, singer/songwriter Keren Ann released her self-titled album in the U.S. and, unsurprisingly, remained under the radar. Keeping her instrumentation sparse, her work is mostly tranquil and perfect for a calm wintry day. To hear her voice is to experience a fine cut of silk gently falling on your consciousness. Very soothing stuff.
Keren Ann - Lay Your Head Down
I found the songs “It’s All A Lie” and “Harder Ships of the World” reminiscent of Mazzy Star and wondrous in its simplicity. Still, others like “Lay Your Head Down” and “Between the Flatland and the Caspian Sea” have a subtle bluesy feel. My favorite track is the atmospheric “Liberty”. I loved how the song morphs from sweet sentimentality to spiritual choral.
Regrettably, 2 tracks prevent this from being a flawless release. The inclusion of “It Ain’t No Crime” is directionless and jarring when put up against the meditative mood of the other songs. “Caspia” is without direction as well, and seems to have been added as an afterthought.

However, with prices as low as $5.35 from Amazon’s various merchants you really can’t go wrong. Also, individual tracks can be bought for 99 cents apiece from their MP3 service. All in all, this is a great way to enjoy some fine music from a talented artist.
Kick back, relax, and give Keren Ann a listen.

It’s a great album. Saying that, her 2 previous albums were even better. Once of the better singer/songwriters out there at the moment.
