Caribou
By: Kendall | in: Music |
I recently received a video in the mail from a group called Caribou. It turns out Caribou is Dan Snaith (AKA Manitoba). Snaith started his career with the theft of a high school music sampler that was aging in the corner of his High School’s music department. In the isolation of Ontario, Canada, snaith honed his skills with little else to do besides practice music and record. Obviously, this seems to have worked for the best. Caribou has just released a 4th full length record entitled Andorra. The album comes out courtesy of merge records (Spoon, The Buzzcocks, Dinosaur Jr., Imperial Team, and many many others). All of the music is created by Dan in the studio, but he does tour with a band. The music is similar to that of The Go! Team, but more psychedelic, and filled with vocals that sound like they came straight out of the 60’s in the middle of an acid test. My attention was originally caught by the tuneful bliss that slipped out of my laptop, but what really grabbed me is some of the videos I managed to have dug up. The amazing soundscapes filled with wandering strings, jangly guitars, and lots of interesting ambience blends amazingly with the dreamlike videos.
Trivia for the day:
In late 2004, in the most unexpected turn yet, Caribou was born out of the ashes of a lawsuit enacted by aging punk rocker turned wrestler Handsome ‘Dick’ Manitoba. In surely one of the most bizarre trademark lawsuits in recent years Handsome ‘Dick’ sued Snaith for unlawfully using the name Manitoba – a name incidentally shared by one of Canada’s ten provinces. Finding himself limited by the high-priced realities of trademark law, Snaith opted to take the high road and change his nom de rock to Caribou.
Caribou will touring North America heavily this fall.

His latest album, ‘Andorra’ is marvelous i gave it a 9.5/10 on my review.
These guys sound pretty cool, I particularly enjoyed the “old man on the carousel” vid, though “line drawings” and “beach” were nice too. “Big Heads” was amusing to watch but the music was a little low key for me. Despite my dislike for live music I think I’ll go see these guys. Thanks for the tip, Kendall.
Troubadour show!
nice songs, loved the videos!
Caught them live in Berlin last night…only saw the last few songs of the show but they were amazing.
