Girl Nobody: Balaclava Casino Heist - Break Up To Make Up
By: Lee H | in: Music |
Shortly after their debut album “The Future Isn’t What It Used To Be.” (2004) the Vancouver based band Girl Nobody decided to call it quits. Lucky for us they decided to set their differences aside and record their sophomore effort “Balaclava Casino Heist“, with producer Futcher (The Be Good Tanyas) on the boards. Oddly enough the album was written while the band was in the mist of calling it quits so the theme of breaking up runs throughout the album. In fact the first line of the title track and first song on the album is “Gettin’ ready to go.”

But “Balaclava…” is far from somber. In fact the title track is actually a political rant. (heist = capitalism, casino = our money) While it’s the vocals of lead singer Marta Jaciubek-McKeever that steals the show for the most part, the rest of the band is hard to take for granted. The bass layer, Jeremiah Schneider takes the lead on a number of songs to formidable results. It’s also worth mentioning that all the members of the band can play each others instruments. And quite well I might add.

With just one album under their belts the band is probably most known for their live shows that have been described as “an eerie Berlin cabaret, or electro-pop meets The Who.” Whether using the the backwards loops and dub guitar on “Sniffing Glue” or the trip hop musings of “Icons bleed” Girls Nobody prove themselves to be fearless in the face of diversity and we, their humble listeners, are made better for it.
