Horror Briefs: Alligator

Alligator

The killer animal craze of the seventies lasted into the early eighties and produced at least two fun low budget films, both written by John Sayles, who’s since gone on to a career as a director. If you’re interested in a good killer animal movie allow me to recommend “Alligator” where an impossibly huge specimen of the title beast terrorizes Los Angeles. Well… mostly it terrorizes L.A.’s sewer system, but it’s still a good movie. Free of digitized effects, (which means real alligator on tiny sets) the movie stars Robert Forster as a stalwart policeman who’s partners (naturally) have a habit of dying. Of course the real star is the very angry alligator that ravages everything he can get his teeth on. Growing up in other people’s effluvia will make you grumpy I guess. This movie is witty in all the right places, it’s not a good ‘Bad’ movie, it’s just plain good.

It’s everything a movie about a giant alligator terrorizing a major city should be.
