How to be a Music God on Second Life

By: Rustycat | in: Music |

There are countless ways for music lovers to discover new artists these days, you can easily sign up to Last.fm, Myspace or even the talked about ILike service, but this one tops them all.

Whether you’re an artist looking to expose your music to new fans and get recognized, or just an average Joe looking to discover new bands and some cool tunes, the internet is the place. For years now MySpace and other music communities have been exposing up and coming music acts in the traditional or web 2.0 styles, but only recently have I discovered my Second Life.

Second Life

Yes, I know you read about it already and it’s old news. FYI Technorati statistics show that each day Second Life is mentioned over 8000 times on the blogsphere. But I’m not going to bore you with tech info; I want to focus on the MUSIC niche.

Music lovers: You can find endless opportunities to discover new artists and some great people on Second Life. It’s quite exquisite. Just click the search page and look for ‘live music’ on events. Disco, covers, acoustic, rock – anything and everything!
As opposed to all the community websites you already know, you can actually chat with real live people and make cool friends. Truly inspiring.

Artists: You have got to jump this boat while it’s still close to shore. I went to the Second Life website and read about performing there. It’s so easy it’s amazing. All you have to do is log in to the ‘Live Music Enthusiasts’ group and chat a bit with some people, you’ll get amazing offers to perform at their clubs for free, or better yet earn a few bucks. I chatted with ‘Moongazer Perhaps’, a very nice club owner chic that offered me a chance to showcase an artist I know.
Once you’ve established a friendship with a venue owner, you have to sign up with ShoutCast and stream a live performance. When you’re on stage performing, you can connect with your audience and chat throughout the show.
What a great way to promote your music, it doesn’t get better than this.

Only one small problem, it’s time consuming. You’ll get so lost within the virtual world (or the “Metaverse” as they call it); you’ll end up forgetting to feed your cat.

As a performing musician for 43 years there are so many ways now for musicians to get their names and music out there.I would suggest after a band does a lot of free gigs, especially after being requested, look into getting a manager. Let them do the looking & the booking. A good one will be able to get you at least some paid gigs. Then you can move up from cat food to Top Ramen!

I know what you mean about getting “lost in {cyber}space” but believe you me, my big ole bear of a cat won’t let me forget to feed him. He nuzzles and hugs until the food is forthcoming, no matter what I’m doing. My other cats want theirs, too, and have their way of asking.
