Introducing: The Hourly Radio

By: Kendall | in: Music |

I stumbled on The Hourly Radio (MySpace) recently while learning they are currently on tour with Orlando, FL rock veterans Plain Jane Automobile. The quartet hails from Dallas, TX.

The Hourly Radio

Members are: Aaron Closson [vocals + guitar], Ryan Short [guitar], Adam Vanderkolk [drums], and Tim Jansen [bass]. Formed in 2003, they started writing songs an acoustic guitar. By January 2005 THR released their first EP Lure of the Underground, and were invited as the main tour support for Stellastarr on their US tour. Buzz of their amazing live show started to flow through many music blogs. In December of 2005 they signed with UK indie label Kirtland Records and by March of 2006 they returned home with Stellastarr and continued on a sold out UK tour. In September of 2006 THR released History Will Never Hold Me their Debut LP. (video for the single Deaf Ears).

The Hourly Radio

Like many of today’s indie bands, The Hourly Radio seems to be influenced heavily by 80’s dance rock, but take on the more serious musicianship and songwriting proving they are more than just revivalists. The album is filled with delayed guitars reminiscent of The Edge circa the Joshua Tree leading to an amazing blend of atmosphere and urgency. Singer Aaron Closson can belt too. His voice can travel from regular singing to a stunning Falsetto with little effort giving Jeff Buckley a run for his money. On their CDBaby webpage Guitarist Ryan Short explains, “I don’t consider myself a guitar player…I just own a guitar. However, I also own a lot of records, so I think I have a decent idea of what a proper song should sound like.” Point proven. It these differences that can probably keep THR out of being bunched into the typical dance rock genre, and putting them in a noticeably better place many of it’s brethren. Their headlining tour through the US continues through March and dates include 4 shows at the annual SXSW music festival where they are sure to attract some heavy attention.
