iPhone?

By: Kendall | in: General, Technology |

I’m confused about the whole iPhone thing. It’s cool. It’s really pretty. It’s sleek, and fairly innovative. The cost is a bit high, but doable. The thing that gets me is the fact that to get an iPhone I will have to break my cell phone contract with my current company. I’m pretty happy with my provider and not sure that I want to switch just to get a new phone. There has to be others out there like me, that have almost a year to go on their current contract, and refuse to pay a few hundred dollars EXTRA to get out of a contract, and then buy a $500-600 phone with another provider. Not only that, but if I hear a song that I want with my current provider I can download it right then and there to my cheesy Razr phone, which you cannot do on the iPhone. You will actually have to download the song, movie or picture to your Mac or PC and upload it from iTunes. Um… that’s a few extra steps.

iPhone

The iPhone is a great gadget. I see it and I want one. I get a little lust at first site, but when I do a little soul searching, I just can’t bring myself to go through all the headaches that come along with it. It’s like getting into bed with a person you know is insane, and is going to cause you all kinds of trauma. It might be a fun romp for a bit, but not worth it in the long run. Am I the only one that thinks Apple will sell a bunch of cell phones to a few gotta have-it gadget freaks right off the bat, and then fall into a slump?

I think the iPhone is the new PS3. It may be the most advanced piece of hardware out there but that does not mean you should buy it.

It’s amazing how good they are at marketing. I have absolutely no need for it, I have yet to own an Apple product I didn’t regret buying, yet I still want it.
(OK, I did like my first Apple IIc)

I don’t regret buying my iPod, I feel like making the day I did some sort of personal holiday.
Though I will not be buying an iPhone (at least not yet) I think the idea of combining gadgetry is basically sound. Mp3 player, phone, hand held personal computer/blackberry. Think if you bought those all separately and the $600 price tag doesn’t seem so bad.
Still, I like their product unveiling product better. GOTTA get me one of those!

Hmmm, let me see. I already have a Samsung I6 PMP, a Sony Ericsson W950i, an Ngage Nokia Phone and an O2 xda2i smartphone. I dont think the iphone is a combintion of any of these. Buying one would mean ignoring the fact that it does not have the following:

    • Songs as Ringtones
    • Games
    • Any flash support
    • Instant Messaging
    • Picture messages (MMS)
    • Video recording
    • Voice recognition or voice dialing
    • Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP)
    • One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)

Stuff we already knew it didn’t have
    • 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
    • GPS
    • A real keyboard
    • Removable battery
    • Expandable Storage
    • Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)

That’s too much to pay for an Apple logo. But the are just so good at marketing. Aaaargh.

Personally I’d be celebrating the day that I got my Cowon iAudio X5 (for a bargain price of around $200, too, since for some reason Staples was clearancing it just a week after finally getting them), but of course I spent the next week or so ignoring the outside world so I’m not entirely sure *when* I bought it ;)

I believe he was saying that it didn’t have direct iTunes access over that, which I do think is somewhat absurd, neither via the cell network nor via WiFi can you use the iTunes music store, you still have to have it on some computer (and apparently it doesn’t work with 64-bit Vista, even, so you’re still screwed if you have the latest and greatest computer but it isn’t a Mac).

Of course I’m the kind of person who has a basic-as-can-be cellphone because, well, I just need it to be really good for calls! If I need a camera I can easily bring with a much, much better camera, and if I needed an audio player I even have an extra runs-on-AA-batteries Samsung one that I could easily loose in my pocket. Since one can’t run custom apps on an iPhone there’s absolutely zero appeal for me, other than the slick and shiny exterior.
