Label Review: Jagjaguwar

Jagjaguwar Label

Jagajaguwar is an Indiana based indie label formed in 1996 by Darius Van Arman. Like every good label story, it always starts with a musician looking to release his album on a private label rather than no label at all, and so Darius created Jagjaguwar to support his band ‘The Curious Digit’.
Initially Jagjaguwar was supposed to be a one band label, but Darius met a Richmond band called ‘Drunk’ on the road and decided to release their completed album as well. In 1999 Chris Swanson, part owner of the great Secretly Canadian label joined forces with Darius and they’ve been working closely ever since.
If you’re wondering where in the hell Darius came up with the name Jagjaguwar, well he used the Dungeons and Dragons name generator program..
Jagjaguwar is one of our favorite labels here, on The Plugg. You probably recognize many of their artists from previous posts and Song of the Weeks and that’s mainly because they manage to sign amazing indie bands and surprise us each time around.

Glaring omission - Nurse and Soldier… a very good band on this label.
