Loop De Loop: “The Walkmen” get drunk

By: Rustycat | in: Music |

The year was 1974 and John Lennon took a short break from his “loving” wife, Yoko Ono. Along with his friend Harry Nilsson they got into the habit of getting drunk as hell and being thrown out of nightclubs. In the midst of this era Lennon, Nilsson, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and some other drunken bored musicians got in the studio to record “Pussy Cats”. The result was a beautiful and misunderstood album made from classic and original songs mixed and arranged by Nilsson and Lennon. The album is known to capture the special vibe of that era.
Now, a million years later, after finishing the last mix on their new album, “A Hundred Miles Off”, “The Walkmen” decided to recreate this drunken album, and thus “Pussy Cats Starring The Walkmen” was born.

Pussy Cats starring The Walkmen
The “Pussy Cats” remake album was kind of a break from all music rules for “The Walkmen” and their enjoyment is evident. It’s absolutely genuine and gripping, true music at its best. They managed to successfully capture, the essence of the 70’s hinting a Bob Dylan rawness mixed and mashed with a Tom Waits\Nick Cave mood, a true music dedication. But it’s not all about the 70’s, what’s more intriguing is that they were able to add their personal touch and give it an indie, Bright Eyes meets The Strokes, twist, which will appeal to today’s audience. Truth is, the album caught my attention immediately on first listen and that doesn’t happen quite as often as I’d like it to.
With songs like “Loop De Loop” and Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers to Cross” you’re bound to enjoy this fun, dirty, drunk music feast. And for you true music fans out there, who still have the urge to purchase some new CD’s for your private collection, this double-digipack is filled with great artwork and a special “Making Of” DVD that’ll get you in the hang of things.

P.S. – For what it’s worth, I just found out something very amusing while writing this article on Microsoft Word. The spellchecker knows all the Beatles members except for poor old Ringo. I guess Bill Gates isn’t a Ringo Starr fan…
