MTV2: Top Three Rock Songs

By: Rustycat | in: Music, TV |

I just finished watching MTV2’s (Europe) top ten rock chart. I was a big MTV2 fan when it first came out in the beginning of the millennium. It was all about cool indie alternative rock songs, and then somewhere down the line it became a home for Papa Roach and Staind and that’s where we parted ways.

I do like to occasionally drop by and check in on the latest rock trends and what kids are into these days (boy, do I feel old saying that). So, as I was zapping my way to MTV2 I stumbled on to the top three rock song chart. I found it quite refreshing; it seems as if we’re in for a good year in rock.

Here are the top three videos:

3. Gallows – Abandon Ship
The energy! I love this song, it’s definitely my new favorite. It has that punk 70’s feel to it, but it’s nothing short of a great heavy metal/nu-metal song. The double bass drums and cool riffs make me want to go out to a club and bang my head against a wall. Great band, it’s rare in this genre to find good music and good musicians. Check it out:

2. QOTSA – Sick, Sick, Sick
It seems that the Queens of the Stone Age are going all out on their upcoming album ‘Era Vulgaris’. I’ve always been a big QOTSA fan. They seemed to have dropped the post punk thing for this one and just go with plain heavy. The video is amazing and is very successful in delivering the song’s message, well done.

1. Biffy Clyro – Living is a Problem Because Everything Dies
Weren’t Biffy Clyro a mellow indie band? Their new album ‘Puzzle’ is coming out June 4th and their single is a blend of noise guitars, heavy riffs and lots of violins in the background. The video is a bit too much for my taste with all the slow motion shots, but their Napoleon Dynamite (scroll down to see it) inspired add for ‘Puzzle’ really kicks ass.

Biffy Clyro is quite a ferocious band actually…their previous albums had moments of sheer madness. Puzzle is in fact their softest, radio friendly offering to date. Good for them though, they’ve been making quality music for years now and they deserve the attention.
Gallows, on the other hand, walk a fine line between real artists and being a tribute band…

When I was stationed in Germany I had a satellite dish. Sky1 and MTV Europe were the two best things on there!

I was so sad when I got back to the states. I went from an MTV that was heavy on rock to one that was dominated by rap.
